OT, but Don't think I've seen that script out there... mind linking? I'm interested...

Do you use anti virus software or any net manager or safe search utilities?

Windows defender is actually really bad for this...

Best example i can thing of is Eve, Rechecking files. Windows defender is most of the IO.

IIRC, Epic's launcher also falls into this ball.

No anti virus of safe search utilities. Windows Defender is enabled. Regardless that wouldn't *explain* why a VPN gives me a faster connection than a direct route or how restarting the router gives me 80MB/s. I'm doubtful Windows Defender does anything other than scan files.

To make a point, this PC is unchanged since switching from Ocron. If I got 80MB/s then, why wouldn't I now?

Process of elimination, You would be astounded if I gave you a list of all the stupid crap that 'wouldn't matter' that has fixed issues like these.
If you are around the Shore I got a laptop with a NVME drive and vanilla Windows and GBE we can test that pulls the best you can get on a Vodafone Fibre connection. (My home 1G connection)

Cheers

I think it is a great question as to why switching to a vpn significantly increases the download speed.

Maybe the client switches to a different download location when the vpn establishes itself at a different network location.  That would be pretty impressive error handling too.

[edit] i doubt vodafone are doing anything to rate limit though. Networks are complex beasts, the internet even more so.

Here's a clip where I restarted the Ultra Hub

Notice how I start gaining speed right away.

https://my.mixtape.moe/drtpah.mp4

You can see the speed drops at 1:30 to 8.5MB/s

I also just noticed, when the speed dropped I regained connection exactly at the same time to the router. I'm definitely thinking it's a router issue at this point.

Downloaded a game off steam in the weekend. Maxed 100Mbit connection out for most of the download (12.5MB/s).

Other than that anecdotal piece of data I'll leave to those more up to date with how this is all working these days.

Best wishes in finding and resolving. These issues can be really frustrating.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Orcon have had their own 'steam servers' since 2011, does vodafone and would this be any indication of why there's a performance difference?

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

to make a point each ISP has different routes which are dynamic and change all the time which could easily explain your issue.

Yeah I'd say so. See if you can get hold of a HG659 or new HomeHub. They have good throughput most of the time and are everywhere.

It perfectly describes this issue and explains why a VPN gets more or less but W/E...

Since a couple of people are interested I'll upload that script to Github sometime. It's just picking bits out of the steamcli log though, nothing fancy.

Vodafone don't any more, see this post

OP, I suggest you try an Iperf or if someone has a FTP server locally as there are so many variables downloading compressed data through a client that has to cache it, uncompress it then write it to a disk. Yes I know it "worked before"

@Gaddman can you search the internal VF help site for the test FTP server?? It should have that animated elephant clip as a test file or something. Ruel or Jared S know where to find it :)

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't steamcli single threaded?
