John, is there any chance the 900mHZ rollout "youknowwhere" is going to happen any time soon? Been waiting since Feb and that "coming in April" date is well in the past, my 6121 is gathering cobwebs. Frown

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

johnr:
coffeebaron: Vodafone switches off 2G network in fives years - that's my prediction.

I'd say it will be mainly 900 3G outside of the main centres. I'd also say most handsets by end of next year will be 900 3G capable. Another 2 years after that for the average user to have a 900 3G handset, then another 1-2 years to move remaining users.

Anyway, just my thoughts, but should spark some good debate.

2G will be around longer than 5 years as cells for capacity and coverage are still been deployed

and 3G will be a mixture of 2100 and 900

John

Maybe so, and I certainly won't argue with when such a time will come; but I do think this announcement is the beginning of the end for 2G. Next on the block will be LTE and who knows what's after that. I think the number of people still on 2G in five years time will have dropped very significantly and by that time, Vodafone will definitely be thinking about how to manage that spectrum across 3 mobile generations (2G, 3G & 4G-LTE).

great news but i bet vodafone will still have small data cap plans. even now you cannot get a vodem broadband plan that costs $60 for 10gb which wired broadband providers have. vodafone 3g is too expensive and the data caps are far too low.

Confused as other articles state this is to be completed by 2010??? anyway really good news for consumers and Vodafone customers, and bad news for Telecom.

It will be interesting to see what their response is, personally they may be better to roll out REV A EVDO to all sites which will have a better foot print than 900MHZ UMTS and is generally more reliable (based on Vodafones current networks)

The red team have made a bold move here, i think a wise one and now it is Telecoms court to play catch up, it is really a case what next!!!

Ok, that seems more realistic.

Great news for the industry, i wonder now if the now departed Kevin Kendrick at Telecom is glad he left when he did, not going WCDMA sooner and not going 850MHZ like Telstra, ouch. very costly for Telecom.

Vodafone may finally have the data upper hand..
