SimonVF:

Just to clarify, we have two separate service sets that will be closing down over the coming months.

  • From 30th November 2018 we will be closing our personal homepage services.

https://www.vodafone.co.nz/broadband/web-space/

If your homepage includes one of the following URLs, you will be affected by this closure:

  • homepages.vodafone.co.nz
  • home.clear.net.nz
  • homepages.paradise.net.nz

There's no mention of the old iHug home pages, eg homepages.ihug.co.nz

Is this being shut down too and if so when?

I believe all 16,000+ ihug pages are destined to go tomorrow also. https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fhomepages.ihug.co.nz%2F~

Many of those haven't been updated for 10+ years. It's like a walk back in time looking at some of them. I doubt there's a significant cost in retaining them for the sake of goodwill.

Personally, I don't think Vodafone's culture has improved over the years.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

I'm peeved as losing my home page which been in use for my weather station for 9 years.

Maybe they could cull the sites that haven't updated this year.

Any suggestions to where I could move my page?

Hi MurrayM,

To confirm, this does also include the ihug domain.

The homepages.vodafone.co.nz domain is an alias to the ihug domain.

Regards,

Simon.

Hi Afe66,

If you’d like to use this as an opportunity to update your homepage completely, we’ve partnered with New Zealand’s market leading web hosting company, Freeparking, who are able to assist with your hosting needs – or you can choose a different web hosting company, it’s up to you.

Free Parking have come up with a special offer for Vodafone customers who switch over to them. For more information, please see the link below:

Thanks for confirming that, Simon. I've got a copy of the files and it shouldn't be a problem moving them elsewhere.

You might like to get the https://www.vodafone.co.nz/broadband/web-space/ page updated to include homepages.ihug.co.nz as there may be other people like me who didn't know that homepages.ihug.co.nz was the same as homepages.vodafone.co.nz

Interestingly that list doesn't include my own homepages.ihug.co.nz space. Did you get the list from Google?

Yep from Google however I think it caps at 1000 results or so but it's a start.

I also note many of the sites are indexed by the web.archive.org so this maybe redundant however I have used this method successfully on another occasion (as Httrack will crawl to other links).

But the homepages system was "free", getting someone to move to a monthly fee provider is bit of an annoyance. I know its all that can be done, but yeah, will be a few disappointed users out there.

Yeah I'm surprised they didn't arrange a proper handover to a third party web-host. i.e. proactively transfer over hosting & domains and leave it up to them to manage.

I'm sure a lot of hosts/resellers (including myself) would happily buy these clients off them for the recurring domain revenue and opportunity to upsell them on support etc and given the hosting is virtually free (with unlimited plans) it'd be worthwhile just to tack ad banners on the bottom of the pages as many free hosts used to do.

Just a bump as the end date (end of Feb is coming up) and I've only just remembered to move my domain...
