Exactly what Steve said then. When your mobile device "cast" to the Chromecast device it actually just gives it a token and a service identification. The Chromecast then uses its own Internet access (your broadband) to access the service and use the token to stream the content.

This means your Chromecast needs Internet access - usually via your broadband. But if you are thinking of using this "mobile unlimited" plan you can't tether the Chromecast to your phone for Internet access as it is not allowed in the plan.

"Casting" doesn't move the content from your phone to the Chromecast.

Makes sense?

ahh gotcha,

ok , sorry i wasnt aware of that , in that level of depth,

so to get around, connect phone direct to tv via a usb-c to hdmi cable to mirror it, so essentially you are on the phone and not casting it anywere,

now here, i am not casting it directly and not issuing tokens to any third party devices , am i right.

Also while am here wanted to check - is it easy to clone a sim card ? :D

It doesn't work that way. I've tested mirroring from my Huawei P30 Pro (and previous models). The DRM (Digital Rights Management) in most streaming apps (Netflix, Lightbox, etc) requires a HDCP-compliant HDMI cable. These USB-C to HDMI devices aren't compliant. This means when you mirror the phone to the TV all works fine - until you get to a streaming video, in which case the screen just goes black.

ahhh ok kwl thanks for the advice ! this is quite key to know it may not suit everyone's purposes !

hotspot option available for $15 a month, which if anyone is interested to use as a home broadband then becomes $60+$15 = $75 a month, which is kinda close to skinny's $77 a month,

but with voda you get international roaming like no other.

miracast is the one you want to use for this rather than chromecast, but again its hobbled by DRM requirements. I have had it work sometimes. Its still flakey looking compared to a direct player on the TV.

surely with the tonnes of apps we have available in the android market you can mirror the phone on to tv without any DRM issues ?

I mean like in a jailbreak sort of way , does someone here know if such a app exists any chance

This is just for knowledge sharing purpose only, i dont intend to buy this voda plan :) + i have legal paid streaming accounts.

These Unlimited Mobile plans are not designed to be used as a stand-alone home broadband connection.

You honestly can't really compare the two products just on price alone. Miss use of these plans also runs the likely-hood of providers pulling them... Think back the days of the inital Unlimited fixed line connections..

Nope.

There is very little reason why anybody would want to do this, and DRM exists to ensure you can't (even if you could think of a use case).

i still think vodafone or any other provider can go even further in terms of providing value.

cause if you think about it, $60 for unlimited. say an average user on this plan consumes 10gb ( lowest ) + 100gb ( highest ) = averaging 55gb

so give or take $60 for 60gb worth of data avg consumtion,

if you half that , $30 you should on paper get atleast 25 or ideally 30gb data,

but NO , the cheapest pay monthly is $40pm and you get only 5gb , which i think its pretty poor in NZ

In Aus, you get 30gb for $45 per month , which is sort of getting close to my maths above, so clearly there is lot of room for improvement.,

Have you used mobile data in Australia? Good luck with using even those 30GB...

Mobile operators offer a fixed mobile broadband option for these cases where you want to use for the whole house. It's more stable, with a proper router and service based on planned capacity. I think that is more appropriate than "unlimited" mobile data.

Economics of support does not scale with size of the plan, infact at the higher network usage it's more typical for users to need less support than those on lower plans.
