I have gone through something like this except we didn't have the VDSL option. We started out with 3G RBI, then 4G. I added a second antenna and for a time it was fantastic, peaking at 50 Mbps down. Then began the slow, steady decline. Over time it got progressively worse, especially slowing to a crawl in the evenings and at other peak times. It finally became virtually unusable for us due to mast congestion, with no improvement in sight. Then we discovered a WISP in our area that we could get LOS to. The difference has been like night and day. Our buffering frustrations have pretty much vanished. Download speed is capped at 30 Mbps, but unlike RBI, it is always 30 Mbps. It is also cheaper and no data cap. I have no regrets about ditching RBI.

@Geektastic you should be able to get back close to these speeds if you fix what caused the slow down in the first place!

Assuming the Chorus guy has done his best and the house wiring is ok, and same for street wiring, you also need to concider any impact vectoring has done since introduced, and where those better speeds before that, and also a possible increase/change in other xDSL users in the bundle.

I don't know about that. It's not a heavily populated area. There is one new house that has been built within the last 5 years but as to which of the existing dwellings (perhaps 10-15 within a mile of the cabinet) is connected to VDSL or whatever I would not know.

House wiring probably not the best (from 1992) but house is solid concrete and hard to deal with checking/replacing. Also cable from the road must run at least 100m underground before the house.

@Geektastic Have you isolated all the telephone jack point wiring in the house from the Telephone Jack point that has the xDSL modem plugged into and I take it you have removed all line filters between modem and xDSL jack point?

I don’t think it is confirmed to a DSL issue (or change in the DSL speed) yet.
I’m going to scratch away at it tomorrow when I’m at work.

Hi All,

Quite a few people commenting in this thread at the time, so I felt it was worth an update...
Physical wiring issues aren't my day job, but it didn't feel right to me that someone who has a 40+mbps sync rate (and should actually have 50+mbps) would be seriously considering fixed wireless!

We worked with @geektastic to investigate copper line issues.  We couldn't find any issues in the Chorus network, but did discover some home wiring issues and quite a difficult home wiring situation - concrete pad and no roof space...

A bit of backwards and forwards with our tech on-site, a few visits and a DSL splitter installation later we have a significantly improvement.
53mbps down and 6mbps up this was from an initial sync rate of 38mbps down and 1mbps up.

Upstream speed is important for Geektastic's photo backup solution, this should help a lot.

Thanks to Geektastic for taking the time to work with us on this, I'm glad we have a good outcome.

Cheers!
Brent

This is become a bigger issue now and I have churned many customers from perfectly good ADSL or marginal VDSL to 4G due to the upstream speed limitation.

Great outcome, and once again re iterates that house wiring can have a massive impact on VDSL.

Had one situation a couple of weeks back the home owner complained of continual drop outs and that her sparkie brother had said the phone wiring was all good, so was considering going to 4G as Chorus and VDSL were clearly works of the devil.

I had a look, found the sync rate of around 60/6 Mb/s which was not right as the cabinet was 200m max and in a semi rural area, literally at the end of the drive. The house had been renovated probably 3-4x over the past 100yrs and there were BT sockets for africa, but they were on a naked BB service.

Due to the reno's finding the leadin was problematic, and no indication of it from the outside, impossible to gain underfloor access, finally found an 049 pop up in the middle of the house were I assume was once an external wall probably 50yrs ago.

Sorted out a clean run from the 049 to the modem, syncing 100+/40 and three weeks later no reported drop outs.

Thanks are due to @BMarquis for his assistance in resolving this.

Turns out the ETP was actually inside the building so resolution was to recreate outside and connect direct to splitter there. Of course when the house was built nobody thought of Internet wiring because there wasn't really an internet.

I agree with @coffeebaron that upstream is becoming more of an issue than it once was as we move to requiring more two way traffic with cloud storage and that kind of thing.

Ideally I'd have 50 in both directions at least but I'll take this win and know that if the tech improves, the wiring etc is now fit for purpose to take advantage of it.

The wiring in my current house is a mess. The previous owner ran a home office so multiple phone jack points all over the house and an integrated alarm. When we moved I had good intentions of fixing it all but when I got my VDSL connected I surprised to get 65Mbs down and 25Mbs up. I was expecting much worse, so I haven't touched the wiring. Chorus have just run fibre down the street so I expect to be moving across in the month or two and I'll rip out all the existing cable when that happens.

Did your tech check all the cabling correctly ?  I had a similar issue where the copper pair to the house was down to one wire resulting in awful speeds : https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=228554
