I've topped up the SIM (so they have another $10) and now it just doesn't work at all....

Why does it let you spend money on a dead number? And given it was registered in the app on my phone, why didn't it warn me, say, 30 days ahead of expiry?

If it's not working it's potentially expired - after 12 months the credit goes, then a few months later (90 days from memory) the service is disconnected.

@sbiddle 31 days after credit expiry the prepaid number is deactivated

90 days is how long the number goes into quarantine after deactivation

I have had the same problem with GPS trackers that I have installed into mobile construction equipment for theft recovery. You tell the owner that the SIM has to be topped up to keep it alive, but they forget.

I would if I did not travel so much. 2Degrees roaming is hideously expensive compared to VF.

I thought it was in your gate?

It is, but the suggestion was changing to 2D and then adding the gate to the plan, which I took to mean changing my actual phone as well as the gate. I may be wrong.

Yes, that would be correct.

I have 3 prepay sims with shared data on them and have done for some time now, one is in my laptop and gets used every day while on the road, another in a 4G modem at a remote location to provide remote access if the main fiber connection drops, and another one in a 3G dongle for testing.

The Wife is also tied to the account but she is on a share everything, and she has never topped up in the last 5 years either.

All these sims are on prepay and I have never topped them up in the past 5 years.

I try to remember to rotate my sims around as the GPS devices end up with credit on them that wont be used, so I just swap it with my daily phone occasionally to use it up. One time I forgot that some people had my phone number and everytime they tried calling me it would SMS back the location of the car. Oops.

Vodafone used to do free Tablet Share sims on certain plans however these are now $10 a month.

They are intended for data, but calling works.

You could try calling them and see if they would provide one for free?

Yes, I have one in my tablet. I wonder if you can have more than one?

Sounds like theft to me, the money should be returned if it is not used. It's understandable about the can't keep the connection active for ever argument but that does not entitle the provider to just keep the money if it wasn't actually used.

No way is it theft. The money was loaded in accordance with the terms of the prepay agreemen which says that it has to be topped up every year to keep it active. What I have a problem with is the crap all warning you get from telcos that a year is approaching and how they hide the expiry date or dont let you see it at all when checking the ballance.

@lNomNoml If it was theft then you could lodge a police complaint!

Yes terms and conditions make it clear that the credit will be lost to the provider

Hi, sorry about all the hassles.  If you DM me the mobile number I can take a look at it for you.

Cheers

@Stevowebbs @Geektastic To extend the expiry date by another 12 months I'm sure customers need to topup with $20 as a $10 topup does not update the CED in Surepay (credit expiry date)

This is working as designed

Edit: Multiple Reminder SMS are sent out to the Prepay number before credit expiry and number expiry! If you choose to put the SIM into a electronic gate then that is out of VodafoneNZ control and why you should set a calendar reminder to topup

@Geektastic Further to this I'm sure the My Vodafone App does show the credit expiry date so after topping up with the $10 you would of seen this did not change
