perhaps it is across the baord... snap has been going well the last few days during peak time. going well meaning that youtube does not cache.

TCL Wellington’s biggest node was segmented last week (Wed or Thurs night) into two nodes. This has the impact of halving the amount of TCP and ARP traffic on each node, and this all leads to both faster speeds and cures the random disconnect and other issues.

The infrastructure that made this possible was the HFC network upgrade work carried out earlier this year, plus a bit more money for some more bolt on bits. This first one was a trial, and as a result of the immediate success there has been authorisation for some more of the same in Wellington (Wellington/Hutt Valley/Kapiti). I don't know the number, but for sure what will happen is the biggest/busiest nodes will be segmented.

This work should go some way to cleaning up the remaining worst of the nodes in the greater Wellington area. I don't know what the timetable is for the remaining node segmentation program. It was to be something like before March 2009, but things have gone a bit screwy lately with TCL management panicking and putting the clamps on most expenditure.

700mb torrents in 15 min's.. OH YEAH

And downloading images from a clients' website (I'm a freelance designer) I've been getting massive EPS files in seconds... over 2.5mbps sometimes.

I am on the 10Mbs plan and have never seen downloads much faster than 400KBs. I must be doing something wrong:(

Downloading stuff from fast local servers (such as Akamai content) I normally see 700 KB/sec on average, if not a bit more off peak. With multiple connections using a P2P type connection it's easy to get very close to maxing out the 10Mbps.

What type of router are you using at present?

I was using the Linksys WRT54 with DDWRT firmware until TCL fixed the network. Even then I didn't get speeds greater than I quoted (international peers). I moved back to my Dlink DI-874 router which I preferred since it is 802.11a/b/g and it hasn't made any speed differences. Perhaps will try a direct connection to the modem to eliminate the router as a potential throttle.

Downloading with multiple streams (eg using FDM), we commonly max out at or close to 10MB/s (NZ or overseas). Largely depends on site at the other end.

A good way to see if it's a problem with your setup is to download something off TelstraClear's servers, such as this: http://debian.paradise.net.nz/debian-cd/3.1r0/debian-31r0a-sparc-netinst.iso I max out at 10Mbps with a single stream on that.
