Na, it 'ill be Chinook, flying in the 4G LTE tower. Didn't you know, the 2G is really a cover up of their real plan :)

A bit OT, but doesn't NZCOMs have 850 spectrum (ex Telecom) 900 spectrum (ex Vodafone), 1800 and 2100 spectrum.  Do they have enough to go 900/1800 GSM as well as 850/2100 UTMS?  They could be as well off as anyone in terms of spectrum.

Yeah lucky them, might take them some time to get it up and running though.. with GSM now being a grandfathered network with WCDMA going to be the key network of choice, they have to be reconsidering their position and network choice. 850/2100 UMTS would be a safer bet with hardware and networks to choose from, that could be an interesting move!

Except they arrive after everyone else has left, because they're still trying to get through the Resource Management Act.

Apparently the 850 spectrum NZC have acquired exists in an overlap between 850 and 900 frequency band definitions. So they could use their ex-TNZ spectrum for either a 850 GSM or 900 GSM network. I don't think NZC have made any annoucements regarding UMTS yet...

I hear Telecom have a stillborn 2G GSM network to giveaway if anyone is interested? Worth about $30M, going on TradeMe for $1 reserve!

I heard a rumour that Vodafone are about to replace the Nokia WCDMA 900 kit with Huawei equipment, this is the same chinese supplier that NZ Comms are using. If that's the case then Vodafone will have delays in this transistion.

This ad also covers the Wi-max contract they just won for Woosh..........

At the end of the day 70% of cellphone users in NZ are on prepay and only want a phone for voice and text so GSM is going to be around for quite a while.
