Don't think much has changed since Theresa Gattung's famous quote from 2006 - ""Think about pricing. What has every telco in the world done in the past? It's used confusion as its chief marketing tool." 😀

Spot on, although I'd like to hope that in this case it's just poor execution rather than a deliberate tactic. Compare to when Vodafone launched their endless data mobile plans and various promo offers associated with those - most of these were very clear, easy to understand, and upfront with pricing (refreshingly honest for the telco sector).

Unfortunately they haven't met the mark with this launch IMO.

Someone from Vodafone's NZ-based sales team is apparently going to look into this for me but it's not a great sign that even the NZ-based sales people don't just know the answer.

I don’t understand Vodafone pricing this so low. Why wouldn’t you charge at least the same price as fibre basic? No good reason not to that I can see. Then offer 4G-only plans for the headline / low pricing. Just re-signed with them on fibre max but would’ve signed up to this had it have been available in my area (currently only get 3G coverage in Metro Christchurch). Hornby and CBD sees 5G speeds over 600Mbps regularly. Great to see some innovation in this space though and an even better offer with the SuperWifi (which works fantastically, btw)!

@antonknee I was amazed reading your comment as I had the exact same confusion around the $10 discount as you did when trying to suss out exactly how much it would cost me per month. Did you manage to get any clarification from them around that?

Does anyone know if you can use say a family members vodafone phone number to receive the $10 monthly discount if they aren't using it to get a discount themselves? It just asks on the signup page to enter a phone number and they will txt you a code.

antonknee:

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I find the product checkout page for this quite confusing. A $10 discount for the life of the plan is offered, but it's not clear if the prices shown include this discount. Is it $79, then take $10 off that for $69? Or is the plan actually $89 (but this price is not shown anywhere) and then the $10 discount makes it $79?

Then, you have your $10 discount for pay monthly mobile - but at least this clearly discounts the $10 and strikes through the original price which is plain and obvious.

To make matters worse the chat support team don't know - but they can at least confirm that the $10 life of plan and $10 pay monthly mobile discounts can be combined.

I suspect the prices shown include the discount, but I'd argue that's marketing fluff and not really a discount if you aren't even offering it at full price.

JasonParis perhaps one for the team to think about how this is presented.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who found it unclear! Unfortunately I did not get clarification on this, in fact I never heard back from the team member I'd been speaking to so I simply gave up. Dare I say it: classic Vodafone.

It seemed to me you could sign up with any Vodafone pay monthly number, as long as you could receive the verification text - there didn't appear to be any other validation going on. When I was exploring it, I put in a Vodafone number on a corporate plan (which in theory wouldn't be eligible for the discount I assume) and it looked like it was going to accept this.

Wee update, I've ended up signing up to Vodafone for fibre. Their team have told me that you get both the $10 pay monthly discount and the $10 life of plan discount (if you're eligible) - so it is $20 off the headline price on the website.

This makes their fibre (or 5G) broadband $59 a month for 100mbps which is pretty fantastic value - cheap as chips. Am I nervous because Vodafone don't have the greatest track record with billing and getting promos right? A little, especially with the amount of confusion even within Vodafone about whether these discounts stack.

Indeed I am - although I will say it's not off to a good start based on the email confirming my order which would appear to have me at $69/month after discounts not $59/month as expected.

The $10 life of plan discount is mentioned in the same line as the headline plan price, but not as a modifier.

So far so good and I’m happy - service was set up on the day I requested, worked instantly. No issues so far at all, speeds and availability are consistently great. I haven’t had to deal with customer support at all as yet. My first bill is due this week I think so we’ll see how that side goes.

This is definitely taking the thread off-topic, but seeing as I said I would update on this (and in case you're interested in particular @apocalypso):

The first bill is in, and it's not quite as expected (surprise surprise).

My understanding based on the marketing and on what Vodafone's Twitter team told me, is that the headline plans shown online do not include the discount and so the offer is this: $79/month for the plan ($79) - $10 discount for life of plan ($69) - $10 Pay Monthly mobile discount ($59 net).

What's actually on the bill (after deciphering part months and months in advance and a cryptic $0.86 'price adjustment') is: $89/month for the plan ($89) - $10 discount for life of plan ($79) - $10 Pay Monthly mobile discount ($69 net).

Thus implying that the $79 advertised on the website does in fact include the $10 life of plan discount, and the real price of the plan is $89.

I'm not yet willing to write this off, as I've reached out to the Twitter team to query this. But if in fact the website pricing includes the discount, then it's not really a discount and I would think this is very misleading (and that's before you get to the team themselves saying verbatim the discount is not reflected in that pricing).

Yes of course - hence why I specifically said after deciphering (read accounting for) part months - which are not all that complicated anyway.

The actual concern if you reread my post is that I was expecting it the bill to be $10 less (well $18 if you account for the part month which only gets an $8 discount because it’s only 80% of a month) based on the marketing of a life of plan discount and based on what the Twitter team advised.

I've just setup a new Vodafone 5G connection in our new office. It was a test to see if this is going to be a viable option for us (it's a very small office) or if we still need to get Fibre arranged (which is complicated).

After some initial speed tests i'm absolutely shocked at the upload speeds. Maximum i've seen so far is 5Mbps up. Is this for real? Or is this a configuration thing, either at my end or Vodafones? Download speeds i've seen vary quite a bit but typically 100-300Mbps so that's more than adequate.

Can't find any information anywhere on what the expected upload speeds should be so hoping somewhere here has some more experience?
