Baboon: In a process of elimination (above problem a few months ago) I switched routers. BTW - after said problem was resolved for a brief shining moment I had decent speeds again. Then started experiencing severe network congestion issues that many, many people here have suffered from.

The congestion issues people are complaining about is international. From what I can gather you seem to have issues over and above this; especially indicated by your hugely differing peak Vs off peak local speedtest results. Your symptoms do tend to indicate peak time congestion at your exchange. If you haven't been down this track yet, it would be worth pursuing this issue. It won't fix the international, but it should make at least some of your internet experience better (assuming it can be resolved, rather than a "yes there is exchange congestion, but there is no immediate plans to upgrade capacity")

Update: you are right, there is more happening than just the usual Xnet poor performance. Xnet confirmed today Telecom have located a fault at my local exchange. There is no expected time to resolution. *sigh* Well at least the problem is known, so that's something...

Now if Xnet can just fix their International problem I'll be sitting pretty... *chokes and dies on expectations*

Oct 2010 before an ADSL2 roadside cabinet :(

Is your router syncing on ADSL2 profile? I think you are only a few km's from the city, so if ADSL2 that's probably where you are connected. If ADSL1, then I guess a roadside cabinet that may not have a big feed, or an ISAM that may have issues dropping UDP packets during peak time.

You're pretty much stuck I guess til Telecom fix the issue. Even switching ISP's won't help here.

I'm at Holly St Avondale. According to the Telecom website I can get ADSL2+ (and I've also checked and can get Red network Vodahug/Slingshot). Xnet told me that when ADSL2+ is available their customers automatically get migrated to it. However I'm still on an Alcatel ADSL1 DSLAM. The staff I have spoken to at Xnet were unable to explain to me why I haven't been put onto ADSL2+.

Any clues?

Can you post your line stats from your ADSL router - upstream/downstream, noise margin, line attenuation, modulation. Also what router model do you have, firmware version?

There are a few reasons why this may be. You may actually be connected to a roadside cabinet; very common in hi density or commercial/industrial areas. Over subscription at the exchange, so are using some ADSL1 gear to increase capacity. The DSLAM may be locked into ADSL1 profile.

I have seen a lot of activity down Rosebank Road lately with cabinet rollout, so hang tight as this is scheduled to be complete in January - like the whole of Avondale!!!

I saw a Chorus van working on a cabinet on the corner of Victor and
Holly St just yesterday, but I have no idea if he was doing phone
maintenance or installing DSLAMs.

I use a Dynalinkn RTA770
Router. It's old but always been solid as a rock. I keep firmware up to
date. Current Firmware Version is 2.18.01.16_A2A015h.d15g

Ah, there's a clue; the RTA770 is an ADSL1 only router, so it looks like an upgrade is in order. Also, looking at your line stats, I'd say you are also connected via a roadside cabinet, so also after a router upgrade, you may not necessarily get ADSL2 just yet, but it will happen.

Interesting; I checked the specs online, but no mention of ADSL2. However, looking at what is there, there is no ADSL2+, so even if it did connect on ADSL2, you would only get around 12Mbps max (I think).
It may be an early adoption of ADSL2, and so possibly not compatible here.

Talk nice to your friend and so some router swapping.
