By all means, the sites that have been upgraded so far are on Waiheke Island at at Auckland International Airport. You'll need one of the new Vodem Sticks and you should see real world speeds of about 6Mbit/s down (or more).

If you have a device capable of HSUPA you'll see the improved upload speed as well - real world should offer 1.5Mbit/s on average.

The latency is reduced - I don't have the figures unforunately, but it's now on par with DSL connections across Auckland (not sure for further afield).

A further note - I don't recall ever saying we were offering real world speeds of 7.2Mbit/s to the user. I'm very careful when talking to journalists to make sure they understand that these are theoretical maximums. Whether they choose to put that in the story or not is beyond my control, but I don't think you'll find me quoted anywhere saying "we are rolling out a network that offers end users a guaranteed 7.2Mbit/s download speed" or similar.

Don't forget to report back on how the test goes.

Cheers

Paul

EDIT: Typo.

Real world speeds of 6mbps on how many connections i might ask... hmmmm i will look forward to this test but how many simulataneous connections at 6mbps will they actually get off that site, not many i bet unless some major improvements in network back haul have been done.

As has already been stated the over the air interface speeds mean nothing if the infrastructure behind it is not capable of much.

@bbman, you will see speeds in the region of 6.5 ~ 6.8 Mbps DL and 1.6 Mbps UL on these sites.  This obviously is a best case scenario and is dependant on a number of factors and particularly RF conditions but if you want to test the maximum speeds fairly then you should be pretty close to the site.  The sites that have this capability have sufficient capacity to provide these speeds. As for simultaneous users, you are right in being sceptical, however, in general terms most mobile broadband users, and in fact DSL users who are simply browsing the internet, spend little time actually  downloading/ uploading data.  On mobile networks the time that you are actually dedicated resources is measured in seconds so I would be surprised if you didn´t get close to the maximum speed available at some point within a few minutes.

If you were to look beyond the ´my dick´s bigger than yours´ marketing for a moment, the technology really is quite astonishing and if you look at how many devices are available that support HSPA you will realise that this really is new technology not only in NZ but around the world.

I agree - The number of users per cell site sector and backahaul are big issues.... Another big issue is overall speed nationally - Just out of curiosity, has anyone averaged out overall national speeds for both GSM and EVDO networks rather than simply talking up one or two optimised sites?

there seems to be a lot of anti vodafone in this thread.

As a positive note, I would like to thank vodafone for upgrading the oxford cellphone tower to 3G last week.

I don't think that pointing out facts is an anti-[insert company name] movement.

Its more than 1 or 2 sites on 7.2 down and 1.4 up
