thabass: 3G not that usefull, HSDPA is whats really useful.

I am still waiting for these fancy "video calls" to actually work as advertised!

Video calling does not use packet data

Video calling will become a real service when it can be interconnected..SIP or H.323 connectivity between IP PBX or video conferencing solutions to remote workers is an untapped market.

i have lived in Rangiora for 4 years. and i have been calling vodafone and asking them about when they will expand their 3g coverage to Rangiora. it is very frustrating for me, i ended up switching to telecom 2 years ago, and got stuck with telecom's limited range of cellphones available. i have used voda mobile internet 2 years ago, and my treo 750 dropped off 3g signal all the time. can anybody tell me whether vodafone 3g experience is better than it used to be or not? i dont wanna switch to vodafone unless voda improves its 3g coverage and stability. i dont want anymore drop off signal!
i wish telecom wcdma signal and coverage will be better than voda. fingers crossed....

Knowing this area very well i would say that Vodafones 3g Extended will improve their coverage considerably as it is rolled out but of course once w850 launches this area will still be better covered by Telecom unless Vodafone intends on installing new sites. I would imagine for Vodafone like Telecom the focus is on 3G extension and not foot print extension, i could be wrong but that would be focus most likely.

By 3rd quarter we should know who has the best foot print for 3G, Telecom or Vodafone, but when it comes down to it with some the new stuff i have been looking at and working with suppliers on you will be able to choose the Telco for your environment. There will be better Voda coverage areas and better Telecom coverage. with the gear i am looking at all you need is a SIM and data plan, the hardware can be adapted to the 3g network your on, a radio change before shipping or done after sale if requirements change. Note i am not talking about a simple USB data card here. watch this space!

Canterbury Oxford went live not that long ago 3G 2100mhz

(Please never count on a site been 3G 900mhz cause its a rural area)

Thanks for the clarification on that, it all depends on what the investment is for the area in concern.

At least there is a 3g alturnative in the area, 900 or 2t 2100mhz. With the right set up you can get 2100mhz signal some distance from the site, its just obviously not as good as 900 or 850mhz wcdma.

will rangiora area have 2100mhz or 900mhz??
it is so damn exciting to hear that rangiora will get 3g coverage soon!!
ok. after it goes live, I will certainly buy a 3g phone such as treo, to take advantage of the 3g network!

if it will be umts, then the speed won't be fast enough for VOIP skype on my PDA. it has to be HSDPA. im using telecom evdo rev a, which has very fast download and upload speed on my PDA. upload speed can reach 350k. (theoretical upload speed is 1.8mb)
but the theoretical download and upload speed of UMTS are 364k, not fast enough for my needs.
and another question. is there any HSUPA coverage currently in new zedaland? if yes, then which area does it cover?

voip is fine on regular 384k umts... I found the N80 better then the n95 for call consistancy when doing voip over 3g...

I will have a look at the coverage map now.

all 3G sites are HSDPA.

HSUPA is on Waiheke island and Auckland Airport sites along with 7.2mbps down that are showing real world average download speed of just over 6mbps and 1.5mbps up. (these sites take alot of traffic)

From Johns earlier posts, i would imagine Rangiora will be 2100mhz for now, i think there are two sites there at the moment.
