I've just visited the OpenDNS forums and the discussion on the top of the queue was about TelstraClear not working well with external DNS systems.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone actually called TelstraClear, asked to speak with someone who talks Geek and tried to get to the bottom of it?

I believe this thread may well be discussing 2 different problems -but I can say that since Saturday midnight the time-out /drop outs stopped happening and I've been getting excellent gaming performance again.

Thing is I'd love to know what the actual problem is as I can't help but feel it will happen again, and that the underlying problem may well still exist.

I've posted an update about the proxy and OpenDNS problems now. I think we should keep this discussion here to the ARP problems you are seeing.

I agree the DNS issues is a separate (though vaguely possibly related) issue and a separate thread should be used.

I would mention that I don't believe this is an ARP issue.  I believe that particular issue was appropriately addressed with the VLAN segmentation, and I've noticed no increase in the activity light on my Modem (since the fix went through) which I took as the primary evidence of excessive traffic (along with the actual performance issues).

I'm going to speculate (and that is all it is) that there has been increased load on the Wainui node (ie oversubscription) and that that has been the reason for the performance issues when talking to Telstas gateway.

But whatever the problem, it appears to have been (mostly) resolved now.  Pings have been very good (except for 1 or 2 occassions) for the last week or so now.

Hi,
Olof from TelstraClear here. I agree with Freitasm, probably a good idea to keep this thread to the "ARP issues". As you know we have upgraded our network and segmented it into VLANs to address these issues.
Needless to say, we are always keen to ensure that we provide an excellent broadband service to our customers. Hence, I would really appreciate if the people in this thread that has the "ARP issue" could e-mail me with locations (ideally addresses) and times for the problems. I will then escalate to our operations team for investigation and resolution as required. My e-mail address is:
olof.olsson@team.telstracler.co.nz
I will also attempt to look into the issues raised in the other threads.
From a DNS perspective, I recommend that you use the following TelstraClear DNS servers:
203.97.78.43
203.97.78.44

(If you are on PDQ/ADSL, the above are automatically configured via PPP.)

Olof, thankyou very much for your posting.

It is great to know there is someone (technical) we can approach if/when performance issues like this do crop up.

As stated in my previous post, the system appears to be running well at the moment (which is great) However, if I do start getting lag issues again (that correlate to poor pings against Telstras gateway) I will definately supply details of the event.

Cheers

Not sure if it's connected or not.
My email seems to be very slow to connect and download at the moment.
Surfing etc seems ok though.

Edit:
Should probably clarify.
I'm using Paradise email.
Seems to take a very long time to download given how little email I get.

I've switched my DNS to the above listed IP addresses.
I did have the old Paradise DNS servers listed at 203.96.152.4 & 12.
Doesn't seem to have made any difference to emails, or in fact anything.

Hmmm... Geoffwnz. We have no known e-mail issues. Downloading your e-mail should be fast. (Very fast if you are on cable!) Can you provide some details as to what is actually slow?

All,

If you are using OpenDNS or or other overseas DNS servers, your problems may be related to an issue with geographic load-balanced web sites (such as Akamized sites). Please refer to my post in this thread:

Seems to be the connecting to the mail server takes longer than it used to, then the actual downloading is significantly slower than it was, say, last week.
I'm running Thunderbird with AVG Free as my virus scanner.
It could potentially be AVG slowing things down I guess but I haven't been keen enough to turn it off to try it.
