I use the Vodafone 720 for mobile broadband though.... i use that $1 a day offer quite a lot.

Well you did get a 3G phone, and it will have 3G in a good chunk of where most NZers spend their time. Once you get out a city or major town it probably won't though . . .

I still can't get 3G on my iPhone in Newmarket or other parts of Auckland CBD... In the last few weeks places I used to get 3G are now dropping down to 2G.

But I noticed a NZ Comms site appear within a few hundred metres of my apartment with full signal that Vodafone are unable to provide coverage to... ya!

Might pay to get the handset checked out I pass through New Market everyday and have no issues with 3G

Sounds like the receive is playing up at certain levels

Have you compared the signal to another 3G handset in the same areas?

My limited use of an iphone was plauged by 2g dropdowns - like the N95 did as well when set to dual mode. Apple in their infinite wizdom only lets you turn off 3g, not 2g (I am guessing since 3g is so crap in the states) so that leaves you with it falling down to 2g. Usually right when you want to use it. And with no edge it may as well disconnect since its about as useless at opening anything.

Loads of places have great coverage of 3g and still end up going onto 2g - hell my house can see a 3g site and a iphone here will still pick 2g sometimes.

Not an exact number but 2100 coverage has only been deployed in major cities and towns. Everything else (roughly the remaining 30% of the population to take you to Vodafone's 97% coverage) will be 900MHz.
