What do you think Telecom will release with their new network. This type of deal brings mobile broadband to the masses but still has a way to go. If Telecom put out an entry level plan that incldued data it would give them the edge over vodafone. Say $10 a month for 100MB anytime etc. Would really stir things up.

On http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/mobile-web.jsp it still says
*If you use a small amount of data you'll be charged at the core rate
of $5 per MB (1MB is equal to 1024KB), until you use $1 worth. This
will be at around 205KB (about 5 to 10 Vodafone live! pages or around 4
standard web pages.

Yes - It always has been.

On the casual rate you're charged at $5 per MB in 10kb blocks until you get to $1 then pay nothing until you get to 10MB where you are charged at $1 MB.

Ahh right.

Still, as per my earlier comment, it woudl be a whole lot nicer/more useful if they would charge in 10kb/100kb blocks up to $1 for the entire 10MB as opposed to the $5 for the first MB thing they do now.

It would be nice but from a business point of view simply wouldn't stack up. It's also impossible to bill in 10kb blocks if you're only paying 10c / MB for that - that's 1/10th of 1c.

If you are regular data user you really be on a data plan. It's unfortunate at present that Vodafone's data plans to really suck if you're simply wanting ~200MB for a montly plan for handset only usage (ie don't have a data card or want to tether your device) but things are there are some changes on the way.

I would imagine there would be quite a few users like me that need a small data plan for use of data from handset. At the moment it is easy for me to use a little more than the amount of data needed hit the $1 per 10MB per day but across the entire month I would use less than 10MB. Apps that use assisted-GPS, automatic weather forecast etc can ne used daily and you can end up paying $30 per month for a relatively small amount of data.
At the moment the most economical option is the casual rate but it is easy to end up in a situation where I can use $1 per day. A plan that allows 10MB or something spread across a month would be ideal for me.

I can't agree more.. There should be $10 and $20 data options available but there aren't so there isn't much we can do about it.

I don't suppose there are any unlimited mobile data for a fixed charge per month options on the horizon are there ??

Easy for billing and easy for users, just pay one charge a month and use it instead of data blocks

Very few options for that on ADSL let alone mobile. And look at how much it costs on ADSL and think about how unaffordable it would therefore be on mobile :-)

haha, you can't even get unlimited DSL/landline broadband, don't think unlimited mobile data will EVER happen.

unlimited mobile data works fine in a lot of overseas countries and you can get unlimited data on both cable and adsl in a lot as well for home use.

but then we must be different in nz I guess..

Actually "unlimited" mobile data are most of the times limited by "fair use" clauses that allow only 5GB or 10GB allowances.

As for "unlimited" cable and DSL, even in the US Comcast and others are now limiting - 250GB is still better than plans in New Zealand, but limited.

Unlimited data is very much a myth these days.

Take a look at what major ISP's in the USA such as Comcast and Time Warner are doing. And don't even start talking about the UK where many people will gladly tell you ISP performance is worse than NZ.

Flat rate mobile data is also an exception rather than the norm and typically only available on an iPhone and typically excludes any handset that can be tethered.

Flat rate data and plans really are history..
