NZDSL:

Download Speed: 9447 kbps (1180.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1997 kbps (249.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Slingshot:

Download Speed: 7679 kbps (959.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1994 kbps (249.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 20 ms

Speedtest.net (you don't mention which server.. I used Auckland)
9.74mbps down
1.97mbps up

Those are my speed results, as Sbiddle says you can't specifically rely on speedtest results.  The results alone above vary quite a bit (well, the Slingshot one especiall).

I'm on a 10mbps down / 2mbps up plan and those results are acceptable (in fact I think they're really good).

Telstra are definitely taking a risk by pissing off their existing customers by overpromising and underdelivering. The mythical, awesome, ground-breaking, one-box-to-rule-them-all, PVR is still missing in action, and now the 25mbps speed increase in Wellington has also gone AWOL. I can only assume the powers-that-be at Telstra have worked out that the risk is worth it... I'm watching more and more Freeview today, and if I didn't need Sky then I would probably ditch TCL cable all together and get an ADSL2 connection.

I did some testing over the last couple of days on a Cable connection and was quite impressed, very stable download rates and great pings and impressive absense of jitter. Download was 4Mbps solid down and 2Mbps solid up (this was the basic 5GB plan) so was right on par. Know someone on a fullspeed plan so I'll check that out as well.

My newlands problems must have been unique though I did got pictures of the serving cabinet which may explain some of the faults.

lchiu7, I can't find the article on the net. Any chance of scanning it in?

Something interesting: While I was looking for the article, I noticed that the 25Mbit plan was originally announced on 18 June 2007! They said it'd happen by the end of that year. It's taken this long, and they now cancel it for Wellington, without so much as a proper reason. TelstraClear's plans have stayed the same since what, the start of 2006? Slowest moving plans on earth.

Oh, and the recent email about "new packages and services" that were supposed to be launched "in the coming months" was in February. Tick...tock...

In these times of recession I'd suggest TCL take a long, hard look at their marketing department. Has anything coming from it actually happened?

Re the TCL marketing department..

As much as I avoid all contact with marketing & sales types because I am ground floor labour and all things marketing & sales often just do not make sense to me... I would suggest, and this is my opinion only, that the TCL marketing department in this case is actually doing ok. They are keen as mustard and always pushing TCL to be able to sell this service and that service.

However, my impression over the last two years, and especially now, is that while the marketers are dead keen to sell this improved or new service and new plans etc, it is the TCL accounting and very senior management heads that are freezing all action on any front. this includes new plans, 25Mb/s cable, HD service and PVR boxes...etc.

I feel for the TCL man (Jeff) who posts here occasionally with some near official news or statement. He is a man in authority in the world of TCL cable, and he desperately wants to deliver good news, but is hamstrung. He can't promise what he knows should and could happen but possibly won't. Given TCL managements history of delivering on promises he is between a rock and a hard place.

I can tell you what I know.. which is stuff all really.  You already know most of it (or have guessed).

In light of Telstra Australia's decision to go DOCSIS 3, there was pressure on TCL to do the same - and TCL did want this. But now.. with recent developments in Australia... who knows.

There hes very recently (last month) been positive noises about the HD service and PVR set top boxes... again. But as above...  who knows? (HD TV and PVR boxes have been investigated and a STB manufacturer was in fact chosen, but TCL management froze the commitment at the first sign of the current global doom and gloom.

There IS work going on to further the node segmentation cause - because this can now be done relatively cheaply (due to the cable network upgrade work carried out early/mid last year).

TCL (apparently - as far as I can tell) IS committed to its cable system and the delivery of high speed Internet over this system (where it exists) - but it must always have a 'plan A' which does not include cable TV - because it needs a range of products that it can deliver to most of the country, not just to where cable network exists (read: " via VDSL").

TCL's commitment to TV on the cable system is very much on again/off again.. this is why the HD TV and PVR set top box project was halted, and may recently be on again - but tomorrow it could be off again... sigh. TCL can and will maintain the upgraded cable systems for hi speed internet, but for TV - who knows?

The holy grail has been triple play. Internet, TV and phone on one delivery platform. The has been what TCL wants, but these times are playing havoc on the managements commitment to anything. TV with TCL is very much under consideration and may or may not go out the window.

I still hope that common sense will prevail and TCL will deliver all these fantastic services that it can offer - but as stated over and over above - the dollar, Telstra Australia and bean counters (yes - the same ones who probably started the global meltdown) rules.. So - the reigning factor is: who knows?
