Do people still use ISP email accounts for anything? Registering a domain and using Google Apps for Domains (free, world class junk mail filtering, imap and pop support etc etc) is actually very easy.

It is easy, but why should I pay for the data when my mother sends me the same photo multiple times uncompressed because she thinks her gMail account locked up when it took for ever to send the photo?  Downloading e-mail from your ISP is also much faster than from gMail, as it is local traffic.

XNet still provides me with what my family needs.  We do not need YouTube.  There are many people who does need YouTube, and that is fine.  Perhaps those people should not use XNet.  And the fact that XNet does not do any advertising clearly tells me they are not interested in (or maybe able to support) a large customer base.

I want my email to be hosted in NZ so it is my property.

I'm with Ragnor on this one, I use Google Apps as well. With POP3, IMAP and a web interface it works really well. Plus I'm free to leave anytime since I can just point the MX record for my domain elsewhere.

Another benefit is I can use their SMTP server from anywhere rather than having to reconfigure as I move around.

What makes you think Xnet is more trustworthy than Google?

With most NZ ISP mail providers, they provide telephone support free of charge.
Most 'free' providers either do not provide telephone support, or provide paid telephone support only.

Personally, I have my own domain and mail server, but forward and keep mail through to my ISP mailbox (Xtra) so that I have the best of both worlds. Like the others, I strongly recommend getting a domain so that you are not tied to a single provider of mail services.

This is the main reason I ditched Xnet's e-mail server (when I was still with them) and switched to Gmail.  It was a real pain in the a*s reconfiguring our laptops every time we travelled from one property (connected via Snap) to the other (connected via Xnet).

Originally, I used Xtra's Secure SMTP server with remote access.  But Xtra knocked that on the head a while ago, unless you signed up for the Yahoo Bubble fiasco, which I wasn't keen on for obvious reasons.

With Gmail's IMAP and SMTP servers, I can leave my most recent e-mail messages (Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts and Bin) on their servers, and access them from anywhere.  No reconfiguration is needed when moving from one ISP to another.

As Cokemaster says above, I also have my own domain which forwards mail to the Gmail servers.  So, if I ever decide to move away from Gmail, nothing needs to change so far as other people are concerned.

Obviously Gmail is not an "ISP" but they do provide secure authenticated SMTP on a port other than 25, and there are no silly rules about only allowing access from specific ISPs.  It's also free, so I don't see any reason not to use it...
