If they took 3% or so of the net profit and invested it in CSR staff based in NZ that actually knew what they were doing and had the authority to make decisions based on common sense it would be money well spent.

To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised (for the first time in a long time) when I rang in the other day , and spoke to someone from NZ. They had a good attitude "Hello sir, how's your day been so far?"

Just really pleasant to actually call in, and be spoken to like a human being.
Not to mention, at the time, the computers were taking a while to load the information, and while we were waiting, we both managed to hold a conversation, it was great.

It made me feel like my monthly bill wasnt such a waste afterall.:)

Give me more of that please!

Coming from the UK i just cringe when my friends tell me how much they pay for their iPhones and plans.

When they ask what we pay here i just pretend I dont hear them.

The force is strong with this one!

WOW! you spoke to someone local!! I can guarantee the experience was harking back to the gold old days when Vodafone meant "service with a smile" and "cool", and "stree-free" even if you paid on the high side in terms of worldwide pricing.

I'd rather pay that $2.50 that Australia levies to lo-end plans if it meant dealing with people whom were local, courteous and actually sounded like they valued their job.

I would do it different.. unless the CEO of Vodafone is using the XT network for speed and reliability ;) :P

Funny story I heard, the old CEO (not sure which one but my mate knows) got his mobile number to be 021 000 000 The joys of running the company.

I'm assuming that if I ran the company, I could get the tech's to P1/QoS my data/voice traffic to drop other traffic and give me a great experience :) Thats how I'd roll

Oh, yes. Blame the National party, in power for nine months. The Labour party had, what, nine years, and didn't do anything...

Oh no, laughs, I mean the one in power BEFORE the previous labour government, the one which Marice Williamson (spelling?) was the Telecommunications minister and decided that 'light handed regulation' was the way to go, the same one which allowed Telecom to offer 'loyalty' discounts which were thinly hidden prediatory pricing against Telstra's network build in Wellington - marching the pricing when customers had a choice, street by street, house by house.

Labour did nothing either for 4 years, but they then did get the balls up to start splitting Telecom in two...

I think Labour did do a good job once they started by the seperation of Telecom, I know it's not a actual seperation but it's a practical solution and it's a good start.

and if you keep looking backwards in time, you will see that it was labour that sold off telecom in the first place thus creating the monopoly and losing a vaulable infrastructure asset with excellent future earnings potential.

You must be older than me :) I can't remember politics earlier than the Telecom seperation which I remember watching as a kid on Telly, it had the big stone carved blocks which the 'kiwi share' was carved into!

I did some research and your right, after national was in power for like forever, Labour came to power in 1990 and things were real bad and Labour did some radical things to fix the economy, would that be right? (the stuff I found was not too specific)

Your right about the future earnings potential, bloody hell we shipped off billions overseas for a short term fix.

I've been back in Oz for a month now and I'm loving the choice available to me with all the telco's and ISPs. I grabbed a Vodafone Prepay SIM at the airport when I arrived and got a $29 recharge. That $29 gives me $150 of value. My gf has a Three Prepay SIM and she tops up with $29 and gets $150 of call/txt value + 3 hours of Three to Three calling for free + 150MB of data! It's ludicrous compared to the Prepay offerings in NZ. Even the postpaid plans are a thousand times better, also incorporating the Cap structure where you pay a certain amount each month and you get hundreds of dollars of value on calls/txt/data.

I agree Vodafone NZ's profits are outrageous - smallest and most profitable market in the world...pretty hard to defend...

grrr....fingers crossed one of the MVNO or MNO's do something to help bring the pricing down...

I don't see how MVNO's can bring the price down when they are buying the same services from the same two mobile companies. The only way to real competition is a third physical network. Why would Telecom or Vodafone sell their warez cheaper to a virtual mobile operator when they don't to the current users?

Doesn't sound like a real independant survey company to me, they don't ask leading questions or load the questions to get the answers they want.
The company which sent out this e-mail wants you to say you hate your current mobile provider

What sort of reductions are you hoping for?

is the 191m operating profit or net profit?

assuming operating profit, that equates to approx $80 per customer (approx 2m customers) or an average oif $6/month per customer.
at an ARPU of $50, that means they would have to reduce their prices by just over 10% before they start making an operating loss.

Not sure, but it's a record and it's only the profit for the quarter, not the end year result.

Vodafone don't really publish the Vodafone NZ profit figures, but you can get an idea from the Vodafone Group site - The New Zealand mobile communications market is worth approximately $1.98 billion each year. Telecom made a profit last year of $900 million and Vodafone paid dividends of $700 million to its parent company.

What is astounding is Vodafone made more profit out of NZ than any other market in the world...with dramitcally fewer users.

Thats a profit of nearly $300 per user with RPU of approx $60 / month so NET PROFIT is approx 40%.....

Unheard of in mobile comms industry - infact a good GP is considered to be 15-50%

Sadly though, as long as people persist in giving Vodafone money, they'll continue to believe it's acceptable to rip us off like they (and Telecom!) have been doing for so long. Personally, I make it a point to not deal with Vodafone as much as possible - the devil you know and all that. At least Telecom has no delusions of being "customer-focused" and "cool".
