The WRTP54g is different from the standard WRT. If it is flashed with non-linksys firmware I understand you loose the ATA functions which is one of the main reasons for having the WRTP over the WRT.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

sultanoswing: dolsen: I had a very similar sounding problem - but the trouble turned out to be a dying modem: yes the good old RTA1320 had burnt its capacitors, meaning it couldn't hold an internet connection (and who knows, if the right caps burn, it may have trouble through it's LAN port too).

Replacing them, the connection to the WAN stabilised, and I could stop blaming my newly acquired WRT54GS (with Tomato firmware, of course). Can I assume you've flashed your WRT54G to that, or another 3rd party firmware, which are more stable and with more options. I just had 28 days uptime, and my connection was reset by Xnet, not locally.

Of course you could actually have a dying WRT54G :)

Unfortunatly, I'm sure the problem is not the rta1320. I've already had the modem die, I replaced the caps with better / higher voltage ones and it is now fine. It's the wrtp54g router that stops talking. If the modem was bad, I could access the admin pages on the router, but not the modem. In this case, I can not access, or even ping, the router.
A reboot of the router only (not the modem) "fixes" the problem.

It wasn't always this bad, so, I'm not sure if it's new firmware that has been pushed out by worldexchange, or, faulty hardware.

Unfortunatly, being locked down by Worldexchange, I am unable to load different firmware onto this router.

I also have a wrt54g that I had before getting vfx, rock solid (using dd-wrt firmware, wasn't with default firmware).

Dolsen:

For over 2 years no problem at all with my WRTP54GP2. Note there are different hardware revisions and I did get one of the later ones, but can't remember any details.

You can have a faulty power adapter. Linksys does not make them, they buy an adapter with their name on it and relies on the power adapter manufacturer to test it. In my job I've dealt with evaluating power adapter manufacturers by opening up their engineering samples - shocking what bad and even dangerous engineering samples you receive from some companies. Even illegal designs. Anyway, my point is perhaps the power adapter is failing and dumping excessive noise into the router.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure mine is a wrtp54gp2 now that you mention it.

Hmm, that's something I haven't considered. It's the standard smps it comes with, but, I'll see if I've got anything rated similar and give it a shot.

I don't have the power supply in front of me, but, I think it's covered with approval markings ce / ul etc, so, can't be that bad a design?

No matter how good the design or what the label says, it does not mean the one you have is any good ;-). I'm running the same setup as you but my RTA is still in normal mode. Had it in half bridge but had to revert to normal to sort out other issues ... more than a year ago.

I also had a problem whereby the WRTP and the RTA had to be turned on in the correct order, think it was RTA first, or else there was no way of getting to the internet. That was only in half bridge mode.

Your setup is supposed to be one of the best for VFX, which is what we were told by some of their staff.

But we are taking this way OT.
