Holy **** at the statement in that press release 40Mbps down and 16Mbps up. What is that likely to be from though? I can't imagine what sources I could download from and get something that amazing, unless I was to queue maybe 100 downloads at once and all go at the same time, I'm surprised the media converter wouldn't melt ;)

What is the theoretical max for this? Are consumer plans expected to have an artificial speed cap?

I'm hoping that my property in Auckland Central will be VDSL2 servicable by TCL when the pilot is over, the price is good enough for me to warrant upgrading from PDQ Max 10GB to it.

Was really interesting to read this thread, thanks for the info, will have to wait and see what the install details require from TCL.

Hi, Telecom have sensibly limited their VDSL2 plans to 40/16 which means they can offer it out to around 600-700m and pretty much assure you you will get that rate. From my experiments which are not on Telecom lines (so not as many interferors) nor using setup profiles that I would expect they may use, it is possible to get 80/35 sync rates out to around 400m then it tails off.

My guess however is that Telecom will throttle the connections further upstream (or in the port) to top out at the 40/16 rate.

Cheers
Cyril

From an article on stuff:

"Mr Crockett said customers on the pilot had obtained average download speeds of 23 megabits per second and upload speeds of 7Mbps."

That sounds like pretty good results for a pilot to me.

Oh, and heres the article:

Hopefully it will push down the Vector fibe prices in Auckland, $1000/10Megabit/1Megabit international. I wonder what VDSL will be priced at, whatever it is Telecom will be wanting to pickup customers fast with a premier service, so I would hope the plans would be between $199-$599 or similar.

Excellent news for those of us looking after national businesses, WAN building will perhaps get easier and cheaper and faster.

But it sounds like the network guys are scared perhaps the backbone loading will blow out, looks like they may spend a bit more time making sure backbones and international links are sufficient.

"But Telecom Wholesale was not yet confident it could "launch this at full-blown scale and have great customer experience''. Introducing the service without further testing would have involved unacceptable risks, Mr Crockett said"

I can only hope they bring out Super Big Time VDSL2 As a Go Large user would say, "I'll pay $10 more for that!"

It'll be interesting to see what network service telecom wholesale launch it under. They have those new layer 2 (UBA I think its called) where providers can make their own plans. I see xtreme networks now offer an unlimited national traffic service using this (presumably over adsl2). Unlimited national with vdsl2 speeds would be great for regional offices, I would look at it for the main offices however I'm a bit skeptical as to whether it will have a decent SLA.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Hmm, will any other ISP's be rolling out EUBA? Can we have free national traffic once again? :)

(There's a SIXXS IPv6 pop based in wellington, sooo, you can see where this is going ;)
