nitrotech: I have a HP Mini 1110tu netbook with inbuilt mobile broadband module, the HP's use a gobi 1000 module branded the HP un2400, this device supports 850/2100 so vodafone extended is out.

Different model. The mini1000 is def 900MHz for the Vodafone network.
I'm awaiting a clear response from Vodafone and will post result.

If someone is telling you that there is a 900mhz version of the HP mini 1000 then I would like to see it.

All HP Mini's in the 1000 range have the same Gobi module, it simply doesn't support 900mhz, the HP mini 1000 is bios locked to only accept the Gobi module and you can't even change it out without a bios hack

So what's this Gobi thing, and how does the WWAN module not work on XT? Is it correct to say then it is "carrier-locked" like some mobiles are?

The issue with XT is not that it's locked - with the latest version of the connection manager from HP they have screwed up the APN in the firmware - some id1t put internet.telecom.nz.co obviously HP throughly test before release.

OK what I got was an HP Mini 311 1027TU
It has broadband 900/2100 built in (as well as WiFi)
Vodafone prepay SIM card is the go. Broadband module HP un2420
160Gb and 1Gb 1.66MHz. 11.6 inch screen
Seems to be just what I was looking for.

Well, it will not be until January that I start using it "on the road" and will get an idea about how good coverage is on 3G extended.
But it's a good size - full sized keyboard and quiet and runs for at least 3 hours on it's 6 cell battery.
But I'm still getting it set up.

Well, it's been a while, since I last posted to this thread.

Been using the netbook since then (about 3 months every year) and it's been perfect for what we wanted:
3G extended coverage built in - connection in marginal areas enhanced by big aerial built in around screen (coverage in remote places is far more important to me than speed);
Keyboard (rather than touch screen) good for long emails, reports and spreadsheets;
Multi card reader for transferring photos etc.
Only problem was it took about 5 mins to boot by the end.

BUT, it got nicked last week :-(

Question:-
Is a replacement netbook (with built-in SIM card) still our best option?
Do they still make them?
Has technology moved on to provide a better option now?
