What a week! Got my i-mate Jasjar and Telecom Apache devices on Friday, and Saturday morning received a box from Vodafone with review units of i-mate SP5 Smartphone and i-mate K-Jam Pocket PC.

Just finished configuring the Exchange Server synchronisation to this K-Jam and let's see how it goes. On the SP5 I still have to install my own Server Certificate before going ahead with Exchange synchronisation.

Reviews coming up next week or so.

The problem is that, unlike the SP2 and the Motorola MPx220, the SP5 is Certificate locked! I can't install the Exchange Server certificate needed to synchronise with my server.

The certificate was issued by my own CA, so its Root Certificate needs to be installed. But the phone is locked and I can't install any Root CA. They want me to buy a Verisign cert for a home run Exchange Server?

As it is, it looks pretty much crippled...

I tried the How to add root certificates to Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone and to Windows Mobile 2002 Smartphone instructions, and the program finds my certificate. But when I try to actually add the certificate, the program throws a "Error adding adding certificate. The phone may be locked".

Arghhh. Hello manufacturers, deveopers, operators! We need secure data, but let us install the certificates!

Followed a fellow MVP instructions on how to remove the lock from the Smartphone - involves running a signed Registry Editor (only signed applications can change certain registry keys), and running an application from my PC while the phone is connected via ActiveSync.

After that I had no problems installing my own certificate and the phone is now happily synchronising with my Exchange Server.

I understand security issues, but... Why the Pocket PC allows Certificate installs, and the Smartphone don't?

Then, most companies I know about have their own Certificate Authorities Server, so they can issue individual certificates for users, servers and root. With these Smartphones these companies won't be able to properly connect, unless using a certificate from one of the Root Authorities (such as Verisign).

I am not the one going to tell my clients to "use a hack" to get things going!

What a way of driving enterprise away from the platform...

No problem at all - unlike the i-mate SP5. Just copy the .cer file to the device, open File Explorer and tap on the file. It will be added to the Certificate Storage. Just tap Start | Settings | Systems | Certificates | Root and it will be there...

Hey Mauricio, (or anyone who can help...)

Have you seen or heard of the 85010014 error whilst synching a "Jamjar" (thanks JohnR - it's stuck now...) with activesync 4? there seems to be a lot of stuff on google about it annoying people the world over and was wondering if ou encountered anything?? I have a customers new toy and his laptop here and trying to get them to have a polite conversation is like getting George W to write Kim Jong Il's christmas cards... Some users have suggested uninstalling then reinstalling Outlook, but thats not really in my 'jurisdiction'... Any ideas???

Yes, follow the instructions on that ActiveSync 4.0 Troubleshoot page.

I had problems on a a new PC not recognising the devices at all. This doesn't seem to be your case. Check that page...
