Well, the Belkin didn't last long with DD-WRT. First it's a very old build (2007, v24RC) and it seems to work well until some load is put on the network.

The TopGlobal is bricked. Couldn't get it to load DD-WRT.

Installed DD-WRT mini on the Linksys, then immediately updated it to Standard. Configured everything, overclocked to 250MHz, set QoS based on IP/MAC addresses for the VoIP and other services and it's working fine as far as I have tested.

It seems I will be keeping the Linksys then.

Great news!

DD-wrt uses dnsmasq for dhcp and dns duties.
If you use the linksys as your default dns server for your LAN hosts it will enable you to forward your dns queries to a a different dns resolver based on the name.

If you want to try tweaking your youtube dns queries then try adding this to the dnsmasq settings under "services" -> "Additional DNSMasq Options"

server=/youtube.com/208.67.222.222
server=/l.google.com/208.67.222.222
server=/1e100.net/208.67.222.222
server=/googlevideo.com/208.67.222.222

This will provide a bit of a boost without affecting other CDN traffic.

Are your downloads from copilot/AWS better/worse/same using the linksys?

The download from Amazon AWS is still slow, the same as with the Belkin.

I will try the DNSMask options.

I would suggest only overclocking it if you are having performance issues. The Linksys that I have does get quite hot and I had to switch it from being on its edge to lying down as it was playing up on hot days. I have never overclocked it. I found when I was searching for the problem that they do tend to suffer from heat issues.

Overclocking the Linksys isn't really needed until you need throughput out your internet connection over 20Mbit.

I use Mikrotik RouterOS on Telstra Cable. It has heaps of advanced features and will run on quite an old PC (eg 486DX4 100). I've got it on a 500MHz celeron now because I've added a couple of wireless cards (one as a client, one as a hotspot). Being a PC it has plently of resources, so doesn't slow down when doing P2P at 10Mbit.
The main extra features I use most often are: VPN, ethernet-over-IP tunnel, multiple NAT (to internet and the WLAN), blocking certain IP ranges. Maybe the 3rd party firmware for the WRT54 has all these features too.
I've used a solid state drive and a large fanless CPU heatsink so it's almost silent too.

I used to have a lot of issues with DD-WRT. It seemed to have trouble when there were lots of connections open (eg. when bittorrenting). Switched to Tomato and it's been great.

I'm not sure if DD-WRT is better now, but if you have troubles, try Tomato.

I'm not sure if DD-WRT is better now, but if you have troubles, try Tomato.

There is a setting that they suggest changing if you use bittorrent for the DD_WRT software. It is on the support page and sorted out any issues I had.

I am happy with the DD-WRT. Got all working fine, QoS for VoIP and other services enabled, QoS based on MAC address and IP is handy too.

No problems so far.
