openmedia: I have a USB Modem from 3 in the UK as they were doing some crazy deals last year and the device was easy to unlock. Only problem is for 3g it is 2100 only. Some of the cheaper Vodafone NZ sticks are also 2100 3G, but 900/2100 GSM.

If you are going to get a modem here I'd check what frequencies it supports.

All USB modems sold by Vodafone NZ after the Vodem E220 are U900/2100

Well... it doesn't work.

Arrived in London last week and tried to buy a SIM from Vodafone UK for the NZ modem. They said it woulodn;'t work -- and it appears they were right.

Went ahead and bought one anyway but while it obviously communicates with the cell network here (blue light is on) it clearly can;t make a connection.

Vodafone here will only sell you a complete dongle package and other suppliers shrug their shoulders if you ask them if thei SIMs will work.

Anyone have a cluse how I fix this?

PS: Should adsd that the NZ SIM that came with the modem DOES work but is incredibly slow and hideously expensive.

Vodafone UK seems to do something strange; I was in England last week and I could access the Internet on my phone, but the moment I tethered it to my laptop it simply refused to connect (using the same APN settings). I ended up getting a modem from 3, which cost £20.

Did you change the APN to that of Vodafone UK?

not sure if this is the issue you are having, but you know how carriers in Nz don't differentiate between tethering and using internet on your handset? well, many carriers outside NZ do discriminate. If you want tethering you often have to pay a premium otherwise it won;t work, as you have found.
