nitrotech: You could still run telstra as they have 2100 in all metro areas - just in the sticks you won't have any coverage.

Telstra's 2100 coverage in Melbourne is pretty good, and outside of the 2100 coverage you will fall back to EDGE on their GSM900/1800 network - which is quite a bit better than "no coverage" ;).

Very true I was talking about WCDMA as the OP was asking about mobile broadband, as much as GPRS and EDGE were good a few years back it's hardly broadband by todays standards.

freitasm: If you are on Vodafone Australia it will be $10/MB. If you plug to other networks it will be $30/MB. If you are using a Blackberry then it's always $30/MB regardless of network.

It's very expensive. It's way cheaper to just stop at a Telstra store, get a prepaid SIM and use their mobile data.

Just one point, sim card activation over there is a pain. From memory, with vodafone I needed to provide an address, 2 forms of ID .

If you can get it activated at the store that would be best, not sure if it's possible.

Correct. DSE insisted on photo id, I used NZ drivers licence.

I then activated online which required an address to be specified but you could use anything, use the address of the store off their receipt ? :-)

Small price to pay compared to roaming cost.

Back home, and I took the advice and bought a Virgin Mobile sim, $5 sim with $10 of credit (but no data) which I "recharged" for $19 to get $50 of credit and 1GB of free data. Spent AUD $24 and got $60 of credit plus the data.

Activation - I was fortunate to have landline internet access briefly which I used to setup the account, activate, and recharge. Just required a Aust street address only.

Pretty good deal, the only downside is it expires in 1 month and by the time I left I still had about half the credit left, although I used approx 500MB of data while there.

Coverage was generally good, 3G at all times in Melbourne metro, with the usual caveats with 2100 (being insides buildings etc). Fell back to GPRS when not in 3G coverage but only briefly.

Thanks to everyone who gave the benefit of their experience ...

Just to update this thread:

we've dropped the rates for data roaming around the world to a standard $10/MB everywhere, on every network we work with.

In addition, for three months, we've dropped the rate in Australia to $2/MB - a 93% drop.

This all kicks off from 26 May. No need to sign up for anything, so long as you can data roam there, you get the new price.
