I suppose users will be expected to fork out to buy a new SIM if we want to use one of these upcoming devices on Vodafone?

Why shouldn't users fork out to buy a new SIM? Do you expect Vodafone to just give these away for free?

No, but I dont expect to be gouged like vodafones current sim prices are.

If you want to use the device, then shouldn't you expect to pay for it? Its like buying a new car but not paying for the on road costs because you old car had a WOF already.

When you spend 1K+ on a device, what is $30, honestly...

Actually this is an interesting point isn't it? And I hadn't really considered it up until now, but isn't it cheeky asking us to pay in order to start paying to use their services?

You'd think they'd be prepared to give away as many SIM's as possible in order to seed the market and hopefully pick up revenue (surely they don't cost much ...).

PS - On the Vodafone website they indicate that they will be producing Micro SIM's before too long and that they expect more and more devices to move to that format (including most phones) during 2010.

I guess it's a bit like an ATM card where the first one is free but a non routine replacement incurs a cost.

I'm planning to ditch my Vodem and transfer the data plan over to my iPad when I eventually get one in a couple of months. The data plan has another eight months to run on its contract, but johnr has told me that I should be able to get a micro SIM issued for that existing connection.

I've never bought a new car, but I'd also feel pretty bummed out if the "on road costs" included a tank of gas @ $5/L, one year's licensing fee @ $1000, WOF @ $200... You get the idea.

I suspect if you buy the new device from vodafone you'll be given a free sim card with the purhcase of the device, but if you bought it from somewhere else, then why should vodafone give you anything free? :)

I wouldn't say it should be free, but at a reasonable cost since once you have it you'll start spending money with them rather than the competition.

No, I expect them to service it for a reasonable price knowing that I will keep coming back to them and spending more money with them.

What about this, you buy a 50k car, but say you have to buy a fuel pump so your car can turn on but you can only get a pump that will work with a certain brands petrol (BP, Caltex etc..) and it costs $250 to get the pump just so you can actually put petrol in your car and use it. The sim card and the petrol pump are both necessary for use of the phone/ipad and the use of the car and without them neither Vodafone nor BP would make any money.

If we buy a iphone 4g from vodafone, will the new micro sim card be included in the package. Will it cost to change our number over to the new micro sim card?
I would be very upset if I have to pay to change my number when I buy the new iphone.
