Certainly a move in right direction thanks Vodafone but World rate is still 100 times the rate I pay in NZ (10c per MB) so will only still be using in dire emergencies.

A lot of room for downward movement yet!

The real issue here is that Vodafone have to pay the rates that other global carriers charge. Nobody can force a foreign network to charge lower rates!

The EU imposed a wholesale cap of €1 per MB last year which was a huge drop for many carriers who were charing wholesale data rates upwards of €5 per MB. In July this year the wholesale rate drops to 80c and 50c from 2011. The EU are imposing the toughest regulation in the world when it comes to roaming.

Rates of around NZ$2 per MB are probably about where our data rates should be across at last the VF Group networks and AT&T's data roaming also has similair pricepoints.

Anybody who things they are going to see $50 or even $100 for 1GB of data while roaming in the forseeable future is quite frankly dreaming. It's simply not going to happen.

What carriers in NZ need to be doing is introducing steps to stop bill shock. The EU introduced €50 caps this year which forced carriers to disconnect users who go over this unless they specify their own limits. This stops people roaming and racking up large bills. IMHO there are quite frankly no excuses for not being aware of data rates when you roam, networks send you TXT messages when you arrive but we're regularly seeing people here in NZ now appearing in the media bleating about pricing. At least introducing these caps stops the bill shock from occuring.

Yes well done my old chums at Vodafone! I appreciate how complex a piece of work this has been and you've done a fantastic job to make it as simple as possible with $2 on any network in Aus and $10 on any network everywhere else.

Now we just need some real-time monitoring of our roaming data usage from our Smartphones - i.e. an on-device application that hooks into our billing usage, lets us set some thresholds etc.

That is good news. I'm off to Oz in July, will be taking my phone now (was going to leave it at home before and just take my 2degrees prepay).

I guess if it's well received Vodafone will continue it?
If Vodafone continue it, the others will have to follow suit?

Nope - as I unnderstand, The carriers are charged based on the amount of data they send through that carrier. The less data they send the more expensive... 2degrees for example.
