mulac: If you guys are interested, I have been in to the shop today to view it. I have been advised that the unit will cost $499 to buy or $15 a month to hire (much the same as Sky). They will also be charging the $10 HD ticket. It looks to me as if MySkiHDi will be the best bet here, as you will have a guaranteed box for the world cup.

As for you, TelstraClear; when you say the Beta Phase will be available to Customers, does this mean ALL of Telstra's customers will be able to take advantage of the Beta unit within the next couple of weeks? And if you can only install 2,000 boxes a month, how will you be sorting out who gets the boxes first, will it be a first in first served thing? Will the pre-registered have priority?

We are working very closely with our install partners in both cities to maximise the number of installation. We will be able install many more per day than normally.

When we announce the launch/first install day, we will first advise all the registered customers (via e-mail) and ask that they confirm their order via e-mail and then our telemarketing team will call you back to book the best install time for you. So get your registration in to ensure you are notified. I will advise this forum when the e-mail is being sent.

Jeff, unless I have missed something there has not been anywhere to "register interest" on the homemedia section for quite a while - so where can I get my registration in?

Also considering the mess that this has been, are you really still going to charge us $25 extra a month for the box and HD without any other sweetner? Sky are doing some great deals at the moment!

In other words - why should I, a loyal customer of TCL for the 4 years I have been in this country, stay with you?

@StarBlazer, there was an email and mailout back in December I believe... it was small window of opportunity for those who were keen, to register. So if you had missed it back then, then you missed opportunity.

With MySky you get TV1/2/3 in HD without buying the HD ticket. Paying that extra $10 gets you the HD versions of your Sky Sport/Movies channels.

I wonder if TelstraClear will be the same - TV1/2/3 in HD for all HomeMedia users, regardless of HD ticket.

Thank you for clearing that up, Jeff. I guess the only thing thats going to stop me from moving to Vodafone tomorrow is a guarantee that I can get it before the Football World Cup.

@Sub - Yes I believe that it will be the same case for HomeMedia, from what I understood by the team at the Wellington store

That's what I want clearing up by Jeff;

So has registration closed or is there still a way to get registered? I wasn't that interested in December as I didn't have a HD tv. Personally, I think it would be a better idea to get people who are still interested as I suspect many would have just got MySky instead of waiting.

Simple questions;
1. Will the boxes be ready for mass distribution in time for the world cup?
2. Are the prices correct; $99 install $15 PVR/month plus $10/month for HD?
3. Will there be any launch incentives (to stop us from going to Sky)?
4. Is there any way to register interest?

I briefly went into the Wellington store this morning to have a look at the device in action.

The TCL guy started doing a bit of a demo by heading to the TV Guide and showing how you schedule a series recording etc. This generally looked ok, but I did notice it took a little while for things to happen on the screen when he was pressing buttons, so I started to wonder if the box was a bit sluggish.

I asked him to show me live tv, so I could see how long it took to change channels. A lot slower than mysky. Like 7 seconds or so, ouch.... but it was hard for me to tell exactly when he was pushing the button, so I asked him if I could press the channel up/down buttons so I could count how long it was taking to change channels. He said I wasnt allowed to...whats that about.

A couple of things I forgot to check when I was in there:
- how hot the running box was. MySky gets hot.
- how well the pause/rewind/fastforward perform (or whether there was a 30 skip feature). I hope this is responsive to keypresses, not sluggish too.

If the next visitor could please check those and let use know, that'd be great.

When I did comment about it looking slow to respond, he indicated its a pre-release box and the final firmware will be faster. I'm not convinced it'll be that different.

I called in on Friday to check it out, though wasn't paying much attention to any of the finer details like yourself. But, the pause live tv feature looked pretty slick. When you paused TV a little box popped up saying how long it was paused for, then you could continue to play or skip forward as expected. All happened pretty quickly and smoothly.

It seemed like a nice box, but I have never seen Mysky running so cannot compare it to this. Am looking forward to it's release.

I had a quick look on Friday too. The interface looks like an updated version of MySky, in fact the rep said they looked at MySky and tried to make it better. I currently own MySky HDi and the interface sucks compared to TiVo which is wonderful IMHO so I wasn't overly impressed by the Telstra interface. There is NO keyword recording like TiVo has (why can;t sky and Telstra do this? It's awesome!).

Pricing was $499 one off plus $10 per month for HD or $15 per month (forever) plus $10 per month for HD so it;s essentially the same as SKY. It can record two channels while watching a 3rd like MySky too.

Overall I wasn't overly impressed, the interface looks slightly nicer than MySky but not as good as TiVo. To me it looked like Telstra coming to the party with a MySky equivalent rather than offering anything new.

I was a Telstra customer for many years because the broadband was top notch and combined with the phone and TV they offered the best deal. I switched to SKY and Telecom because I was sick of waiting for Telstra's HD box to arrive and now that it has finally arrived it doesn't seem worth switching back to Telstra for it. Then again it's only in alpha release, it might get better.

Why do they charge $10 per month for HD when Freeview HD is free? I think TelstraClear have really missed the boat on this one, they are well behind the times with new technology. I quite like TVNZ on demand and I see Orcon customers get it unmetered, Telstra give is Ziln probably THE most uninteresting TV you could ever find on the internet, pretty pointless IMHO!

Also, has anyone checked out Telstra's ridiculous VIP store? I can guarantee you that anything you find there discounted for you as a VIP is MORE expensive than just about anywhere else e.g Dick Smith, Harveys, Noel Leemings etc. If not cheaper at those major retail outlets, definitely way cheaper online. I checked out a camera they had at VIP rates and found I could purchase it $500 cheaper online!

Get real Telstra and offer your loyal customers some real sweeteners or we will move elsewhere!

And what's with that awful animated character they use, is he extremely sunburned or what? Not quite as bad as Telecom's XT ads, but well up there with the worst. I hate stupid advertisers, they think that any PR is good PR and if their ads are awful and people talk about them, they still regard that as success! Smarmy bastards can't lose with that ill-informed mindset. I hate Harvey Norman ads and mute them as soon as they come on, how then can their bad advertising still affect me? It doesn't, that's the point, bad ads don't work! And if they are so concerned with creating a "brand" they must realise that people are not going to connect to a brand that they hate! Bad ads, bad branding will not get people to choose your product.
