MikeyPI: Little birdie claimed Telecom will NOT be introducing microsims. I take that with worlds largest grain of salt, but has anyone else heard anything?

I have to say this is rubbish

I went into the Vodafone store on Lambton Quay this afternoon to see if I could swap my existing data SIM for a micro SIM while retaining my existing data plan which still has six months to run on its contract. The whole process was surprisingly easy - the staff member just took my account number, keyed some stuff into her computer, gave me a micro SIM and told me that it would be active within a few minutes.

Now that I've installed the SIM into my iPad I can confirm that it's all working fine, and best of all there was no cost. Good job, Vodafone.

Just wondering if you get the sim that comes with iPad 3g, and use it in iPhone 4, will it work?

I would say so. Although the iPad 3G is not assumed to be used for voice calling, I'm not sure how this will impact your ability to use the iPhone 4 for calling.

However I don't think the iPad comes with a SIM, I'm assuming this will need to be purchased additionally from a carrier that stocks the micro SIM.

Vodafone store on Queen Street, Auckland says MicroSIM does not cone with an adapter and therefore can not be used in a non-MicroSIM phone.

Also refused to change my SIM unless I bought an iPhone 4 when released.

This seems contrary to what I've read on here and heard by email from Vodafone.

Slightly frustrating as I'll buy outright and this was me trying to get ahead of the rush when they do go on sale.

It should be that simple, all they are doing is a SIM swap which means all your account settings are just tied to the new MicroSIM and not the old MiniSIM. You should be able to do whatever you did with the old SIM providing you use a converter to use it in a non MicoSIM phone.

If anyone claims it is any more complicated they are either A. Lying to you or B. the Carrier is making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Ah, why do the companies make it so complicated to buy the product. I reckon if Apple sell the iPhone like how they sell the macs and iPods, the whole world will be using iPhone by now. Too bad apple is not giving a lot of profit margin to vodafone, who have to suck money from pre-pay users by charging them $30 for a sim-change.

Not according to the bottom of this web page  http://www.vodafone.co.nz/ipad/

"Already got an iPad?

Get the Micro SIM for iPad online

Micro SIM for iPad cannot be used with other devices"

Of course, but Vodafone has a history of making simple things complicated, hence why I was pleasantly surprised.

Kitanai: So does anyone know if they come with one of those little adapters so you can still use it in other devices when required?

Yes they do

Hmm, I popped into the Vodafone owned store on Queen Street, Auckland today hoping to be a wee bit organised and get myself a MicroSIM, with an adapter in advance of the likely craziness that will no doubt eventuate when the iPhone4 goes on sale (Friday?).

In the store the staff categorically told me that they would not swap my SIM for a MicroSIM until and unless I bought and iPhone 4 whenever they might be available.

They also told me that the MicroSIM does not come with an adapter and once I switch, I will not be able to use it in any of my old phones.  To be honest, this is a deal breaker for me.  I don't take my iPhone anywhere it might run an increased risk of being damaged - that is what I keep an older phone for.  Store people have told me that I will only be able to do that if I purchase another phone that takes a MicroSIM.

If there is someone at Vodafone reading this (JohnR, Paul?) can you confirm if what I've been told at the store is correct?

Yea I saw that. But I'm just wondering how they restrict this? Just curious really.

I would be inclined to assume that they are just referring to the fact that the iPad is the only device currently sold in New Zealand that officially supports the Micro SIM format.

I could be wrong, but I agree with you that theoretically it seems to be a safe bet that an iPad Micro SIM would work in any other Micro SIM device. After all, isn't the whole point of a SIM card to allow you to move your connection quickly and seamlessly to another device?
