simon_nz90:
Put it this way, if i was to make a call for 2 hours on account offpeak, it would cost me $60. If i was to make a call on prepay for 2 hours offpeak, it would cost me $1.50.

It doesnt make sence...

Whilst this is true, you have to ask yourself how many of your calls last for anywhere near two hours. The Let Yourself Go deal may have enormous benefits to PrePay users who consistently make long calls, but it's a different story if you are making a large number of short calls.

Or just get a prepay SIM off trademe and put that in your handset if you plan to make a long call.

just to mention to some people, more specifically simon, you reckon you spend more money with your $40 a month. i am on prepay and spend an easy $80 per month. ive had the same number 6 years and i do not want to change it, even if its just losing 1 digit off the end, i will just wait untill there becomes a time where i can hold my existing prepay number and be able to get it converted and use it as a contract in the near future i hope, i have heard rumours. cheers

Number portability isnt rumour, its government mandated fact...

NZ Herald Story about it.

I found this quote interesting:

Telecom's government and industry relations manager, Bruce Parkes, said the company was confident it could meet the April 2007 deadline, but coming in early would "be a stretch".

That actually gives a pretty firm idea of the time frame for the implementation of this service.

A billing system might be a bit more complex but I don't think that is the major issue for customers. While a billing system might be able to determine what network a portable number is assigned to... a customer may have big problems.

With Motormouth and mates rates you are encouraged to call your own network in the form of lower prices, and penalised for calling the other mobile network with higher prices.

How do users know they that they are calling their own network? Will they have some form of voice message when the call is connecting saying "This number is on X network"? Will they just drop these types of plans? Or will they just let the customer fend for themselves?

I still am seeking an answer to why they are extending the promotion only for prepaid customers. All I seem to get from them is their PR fluff. I have a vague idea why but it still doesn't make me happy that they are pulling it from On account users.

I had already sent in my disconnection request on the 9th in regard to a GPRS issue but this does not make me happy. They are taking their time to respond again.

mazdawill, I think you'll find On account customers will on average spend more than the average prepaid customer. There are exceptions of course.
From the Vodafone New Zealand targets 2 millions customers article here on geekzone (google is great for digging out these things).
Over the past 12 months, total (blended) average revenue per user (ARPU) reduced NZ$39 to NZ$633. Prepay ARPU went from NZ$346 to NZ$333, while On Account ARPU, which stood at NZ$1843 a year ago, is now NZ$1760.

Jaffa: Reason i think its going to take a while is its going to be a nighmere for billing systems, ie telecom m8s rates prepay. How will they know that that 021 is actually a telecom number and is cheaper to call than other 021 numbers that was actually a vodafone number.

I personally think that the whole concept of price discrimination for calls on the same network will fall by the wayside. After all, number portability will mean that people won't necessarily be able to determine the network of the person who they're calling unless they already happen to know, and it would be fair to say that people will be reluctant to make calls if they don't know how much the call is going to cost them!

I wouldn't be sorry to see the backside of this type of pricing scheme, because I have always considered it to be a bit anti-competitive to try and force people to use the same provider as their friends and collegues.

Does anyone know if this type of pricing scheme exists on overseas networks? How do they get around the problems posed by number portability?

Thanks, John. Sounds like a pretty simple and effective solution to the problem.

One of the advantages of New Zealand being late to adopt number portability is the fact that we can learn from overseas experience when these types of questions pop up.

In the Herald today there is an article about Econet & Huawei. Poor 'ol Tex Edwards now wants the law changed to make same network pricing (ie cheaper to call 021 from an 021) illegal because it will be a disadvantage to them! Overseas this has an exceptionally powerful way of new networks gaining customers so it's a bit stupid of him to be wanting rid of it!

Pernod: Funny that there was no thread like this in the Telecom forum even though their offer was only ever open to Prepay - they never even bothered giving it to on account.

thats because anyone who goes on Telecom is stupid and doesnt know whats going on - it's proof by them being with telecom mobile in the first place! the evidence is in the pudding........... mmmmmmmmmm pudding

This kind of blanket insult (which applies to a large number of people who frequent these forums), is inappropriate and unwelcome. (Regardless of carrier...)

Thanks.

Sorry to offend, though i must say that i doubt anyone from the Telecommunity will be visiting this Vodafone forum.

Anyway, comment noted; will not offend telecom mobile customers directly ever again (on these forums anyway)

I think you will find that most Geekzoners read all the Telecommunications forums, not just the one for the carrier they use.

For example, there is a Vodafone employee who is quite active in the Telecom forums as well.

I have had a user politely request that this thread be locked, for the sake of not generating a flood of negative responses. Its unusual to recieve such a request, but I feel its appropriate.

Cheers
