maverick: Good points Chaps, and Antonios your right in some of those comments for some people its the little things that they have which are the most important.

The main reason why this was not a major push for us to add our residential services is that there was not a lot of call for it, under our platform IN this is classed in a different service set (licence feature)as you would also well know Antonios and really is not classed as a residential type offering, this is more an SME / business type function and had generally being packaged as such.

Its kinda funny in some ways as its rather easy technically to do and we have had what is called shared line call appearance for 10 years with our platform, internally we use it and I use on multiple devices but I use it more for business, it has a lot of functionality and can be combined with the Mobile phone / Tablet apps that I have which combine Voice/ Video / Contacts and messaging in the one app using the same number as my work phone but really its not a residential type offering at this stage because of some of the extra costs involved.

All good points though guys

Yep very familiar with SCA, more an observation that the loss of simple capabilities can hold back otherwise great capability for products.

chevrolux: The 2Talk one number feature is handy but I am yet to find a customer who actually needs to use it - I would rather sell them IP DECT phones or just do some good old fashioned wiring.

I use it and have done for years. I have 3 separate SIP phones in the house. 2 cordless and 1 fixed. 2talk OneNumber allows them to all operate perfectly on separate SIP registrations.

As do I, but where geeks are we not, how many of the standard families will be doing this, most have your standard cordless dect handset with 2 or 3 extra handsets, so whilst its a great feature for business and geeks maybe not so for residential.

A lot of Home Business would benefit from this and would pay a few extra $$ for such a service. I can see more of my customers now asking if they can do what Orcon can.

I knew you would be, I agree with you as well.

I also tell our vendors they should give a much more simplified pricing model , would love to have every feature set out there for everyone at the same price and let them pick and choose but practically most of the more advanced features generally don't fit in the residential space don't you think ?

I guess the thing is that a 'OneNumber' feature is actually different from the 'Partyline' phone wiring that is common in most homes, but it often used in a similar way. While it allows people to make and recieve calls on a common phone number for any device, it's still not the same a party line (Eg. you can't pick up an additional handset and listen/participate in the same call)

People are used to being able to plug in any phone into a point in their house and use it, and I think this is where the functionality is desirable. If I think of my parents (who still use a POTS line), they have a large house with several cordless phone and a couple of corded phones. They have one cordless base with two handsets, and another couple of cordless phones with their own base stations around the house. The house is big enough that the cordless phones do not have the range to cover the whole house, and therefore a single base with multiple handset registrations in not practical. In reality, should they move to VoIP - they may not end up with a single SIP registration point. They may in fact want to have two ATAs at opposite ends of the house to solve the DECT coverage issue.

In time as IP telephony makes it's way into more homes, the endpoint technology will probably solve this problem for us (and indeed it kind of already does with some devices). I think we will repeater stations come down in price, or perhaps handsets or charging stations becoming part of a kind of mesh network that will address coverage issues.

For now, 'OneNumber' features are a good stop gap. To me, they are a residential feature (SoHo at best) and designed to be little more than the stop gap I mentioned. Businesses tend to have PBX, with extensions, ring groups, ACD, IVRs etc etc.

It falls into a another licence bundle for us Frazer, whilst not overly expensive it was an extra area where we didn't see a huge demand so we didn't want to put more cost into the packages by adding features that would not be widely used.

2talk have an advantage in the fact they are using an open source platform (Asterisk) and therefore don't have the licensing implications other providers have (And as we know the compromises that this can mean).

Depending on how the licensing works, something custom could be built that replicates the functionality pretty easily (Multiple logins, ring all dist), but that also mean a cost in dev/test/maint/support time etc that also makes it not worthwhile.

Perhaps something to consider for including in the advanced feature pack Mav?

This is no problem to re-wire. I do this all the time for my Fusion customers, so they can plug in their phones anywhere as before. In fact, if you want to do this properly; you will be isolating a dedicated feed to a single jack-point only for the naked DSL component anyway; so the extra bit of wiring for VoIP re-injection at the same time is minimal.
