The real travesty here is why he still has an iPhone 3G. I guess he was expecting an iPhone 4 with the serendipitous drop. Must be hard not being able to pseudo-multitask.

What is the problem here? Normally you get offered the same phone as yours if it's available or in some cases if the phone is not available they will offer you a range around that pricepoint.

I have had some excellent cases with Phoneinsure, Reconditioned means it's had everything replaced, you won't be getting a iPhone 4 or a 3GS, you are getting a new phone but anyone would be disappointed if they expect better than what they already have.

It's like any insurance company, don't expect a upgrade, except a replacement, a repair of _if_ they can't do that a new version of the same product.

A refurbished or reconditioned phone is usually better than a new one as it will have been tested thoroughly. It should look just like a new one.

Actually I have found that is not always the case. When something is returned with an intermittent fault, and that fault then can't be found by the company, then sometimes they can then resell those as refurbished and repackaged. This is because either they don't believe the customer that there is a fault to begin with, or they don't have the time to test it properly due to resources. I found this out when a friend purchased a refurbished camera. It had intermittent problems with the shutter button, and when it was returned, they said that that was the cameras initial reported problem, but they couldn't find anything wrong.

You are talking very different companies here. Apple is very, very strict on "refurbished". They have testing facilities that will test the handset completely before returning it to the chain.

Totally understand that, and apple do a good job of it, as there is no visible difference between a new apple product and a refurbished one. However unfortunately not all companies are as good with their refurbished products.

The rep said that the OP would get a new phone.
Did the OP get the same phone back? From what I read they did not.

So technically the OP got a "new" phone Tongue out

But I agree with the others, a refurbished phone is normally really good. The same goes with other stuff too (firstin.co.nz sometimes have it on there, cheap but just as good)

^^ Agreed :P - He shouldn't complain since he has got a new phone, I would say he was possibly complaining on here in hope Vodafone would read it and possibly swap it out for a iPhone 4 or something. Afterall I would be upset too if I got a brand new phone.

yes i can understand both sides of the case here. unfortunately i too was in this situation last week. i have to say even i didnt quite think they would give a refurbished model when i made a claim. Due to the nature of my job and the travel that comes with it i don't have home & contents insurance and so i had to use phoneinsure.
in terms of getting true value for your insurance i think phoneinsure is not the best policy out there. i know first hand of someone who received a 3gs when his 3g fell into the loo ( real unfortunate and true story ), this was  last year so the 3g was in production but however this is from contents cover. and i have to say i am too questioning how worth the phoneinsure policy is.

but to expect a iphone 4 to be given as replacement for 3g is beoynd bonkers no one would do that!!

but i think it is a fair thing to get a phone of similar specs and one that is still manufactured.

unfortunately vf's phoneinsure i'd say only gives this option as a last resort - ie they will always try to give a refurbished unit, especially on the iphone range as apple do have refurb units avalailable.

the fine line is that everyone should check every little detail about the policy before signing on and to just go on what a sales rep says is not correct at all. unfortunately i think i will now be looking at contents insurance in someway as i do not beleive there is any point in sticking with vodafone.

Just on a side note, I've had a claim with Telecom when one of my phones was lost (or stolen)- (Do they use the same underwriters? did they in the past?). I was offered a phone with similar features (as people are pointing out in this thread that the point of insurance is to put the policy holder back with whatever they had before in terms of features etc, regardless of market devalue - if it has similar or better features, that's what you can expect - not an immediate upgrade to the latest!). The phone I was given was refurbished, I paid an $80 excess for essentially a $300 phone and it works great. Like others have said, I couldn't actually tell it was refurbished at all. It was packaged as a new phone.. I think you're worrying too much here over the meaning of refurbished or you're like a few people I know with iPhones that skyte they plan to drown it to claim insurance and get the next one when it comes out :P
