Also DMT Tools is great for reducing the noise margin from Telecom's default of 12dB to 6dB for higher sync rate (as long as you have decent wiring and phone line to the cabinet/exchange).

Ten months later I just noticed that ADSL2+ has surprisingly been activated for my mate in the meantime and I just wanted to share the improvement which ADSL2+ brought over plain ADSL.
Allthough bandwidth hasn't increased (probably because the FritzBox router used is a German one built for "Annex B" which uses a different frequency scheme from the "Annex A" standard used in NZ and so causes suboptimal performance below 276kHz) downstream attenuation has decreased by 26% (from 31 to 23dB) while downstream SNR has improved by 45% (from 11 to 16dB), which makes the connection way more stable.
Upstream attenuation and SNR almost haven't changed at all, which is surely due to the Annex issue.

They are! FYI, Snap are the NZ distributors for Fritz Box, but I believe they're only selling the VDSL gear at the moment.

The Fritz!Box 7340 they sell is actually backwards compatible to ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+. According to AVM's (the manufacturer) website the official distributor for NZ is an Australian company called BDI Systems Pty Ltd.

Unfortunately, that's common. Companies don't know that NZ isn't part of Australia and appoint an Aussie company as distributor for both. It never works out - the Aussies just have zero interest in trying to penetrate the market on this side of the ditch.

Snap just got appointed distributor a month or two ago (we were also trying for it), I'm guessing AVM haven't updated their site yet.

Good to know it's backward compatible though :)

Not very smart to make a telco an exclusive distributor for these devices. I guess Snap will try to market the FritzBoxes only bundled with their broadband service, which means less sales.
The FritzBox makes VoIP just perfect - there's absolutley no difference in call quality compared to ISDN* and you can configure up to ten different VoIP accounts (even from different providers), thus it's a threat to any telco, as customers may switch to some of the VoIP discounters for cheaper calling rates which means loss of voice revenue for the telco. Especially for a country like NZ with comparably high calling rates I see big potential for VoIP and so for a device like the FritzBox, which makes VoIP easy while providing best calling quality. That's why I don't understand AVM have chosen a telco as distributor, who presumably hasn't any distribution channels for standalone hardware and won't generate the sales volume a independant electronics dealer could generate.

*) Actually with the newer FritzBoxes that have an integrated DECT-base station and a CAT-iq-compatible DECT-handset you can make VoIP calls with the G.722 audio codec using a samplerate of 16kHz (vs. 8kHz of the common G.711 codec used for VoIP and ISDN), which gives superior cristal-clear audio quality. Here they call it "HD-telephony".
