Nope

The optimiser all it does is strip and compress your images so your web pages look ugly but on a VMCC dashboard you can adjust that.

Great for a text email but its a dialup account compared to T3G or 3G by Vodafone

Never was a solution to move data quickly or great amounts. If you want to do web surfing or downlaod pictures or send attachments upgrade your phone to T3G or 3G by Vodafone.

When you say 'upgrade to T3G', are you referring specifically to EV-DO, or does the older CDMA implementation offer a reasonable improvement over GPRS speeds?

Yep theres lot of posts here re better, faster etc I was referring more to if having to upgrade to go T3G but as you hinted CDMA had advantages over GPRS reading posts here but I have always had a Vodafone phone and GPRS to me was just access to download content to my phone note a phone as a modem.

Even sending txt email GPRS is ok and the odd download is slow but ok as you dont pay for the GPRS or time on Vodafone Live and using Vodafone 3G to me for Vlive content really didnt deem the cost of a new handset and the the 3G coverage issues.

what do you know that we dont! sounds if you are prob a Vodafone staff member or dealer? more juicy info please.

There has been ongoing speculation and hearsay about Vodafone launching a product aimed to compete with Woosh and ADSL, and Vodafone New Zealand's general manager all but confirmed this in a recent interview on Campbell Live. It seems to be a question of when rather than if, but I am of the opinion that we will see it launched later in the year when HSDPA is up and running.

I am curious to know whether Vodafone will offer a low cost USB or ethernet based 3G modem, similar to the IP Wireless modems that Woosh use. That would allow me to buy a cheap and cheerful phone handset (I don't care much for Vodafone Live! or PXT), and have a seperate device for mobile Internet access. Yes, I know that there is a 3G PCMCIA data card available, but my laptop doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, and this device is very expensive anyway.

1X kicks onions all over GPRS. A bad 1X connect for me is 60 - 70kbps, an average for me is 110kbps, and a good day is 120kbps.

GPRS doesnt even pretend to try and go as fast as 1X on a bad day... (all in my opinion of course... :-)

Nah, CDMA 1xRTT is much faster than GPRS. Theoretically, around 153kbit/s downloads although in practice it's hard to hit more than 100k. Best I've managed with GPRS is just over 40kbit/s, but what really kills it is the huge latency; 800ms seems to be the norm, compared to 200-250ms for CDMA 1xRTT. SSH over GPRS is not nice.

they have this Linksys WRT54G3G 3G/UMTS Wireless Router see this geekzone artical

Over at ascent its $388.51 incl GST well not as cheap as ASDL

Lets hope as per lokinz said its happening on Monday dont know what but considering we are talking about data and I have mentioned Vodafone Mobile Connect cards being not as fast or cheap as the evdo T3G kit one wonders. Also HSDPA is not as you mentioned till later this year it must be around 3G data cards as there is no flash or faster phone that we know about.

Considering how long it took for the Commerce Commission to reach a verdict on number portability, I would be surprised if they have already provided a final response to Vodafone's latest application. I was expecting that to drag on for months and months. Of course, it's entirely possible that Vodafone and Telecom have reached a settlement on their own, but this seems unlikely.

In any case, Vodafone will need to launch an affordable broadband product to go along with their home calling service, so it will be interesting to see how they handle this.

Price aside, that actually looks like a good solution. The only problem is that i assume I would need to get a copy of my SIM card so that I could have one SIM card for my phone and another for the modem/router. If that's not possible, then I suppose I could set up a seperate account with Vodafone specifically for data and obtain a SIM card for that account.

What I've heard during coffee: Vodafone will come up with new data plans. Also, check my blog post and post your questions there...

I think what they do is you get a different SIM and number and this number is on a data only plan. It can be voice barred etc but if this was home connection and you needed VOIP it could be costly.

These units basically have a 3G card in them

Ok, basically the deal is, you sign up on a 1GB plan for 24mth, VF give you a 3G connect card.

But instead of being $149+gst a month, the 1GB plan is now just $49+gst a month.

Is this the only change or are there changes to all the existing data plans as well? It makes the existing plans seem rather lame!

I'm pretty sure this is the only change, and yeah the other plans look lame, but seriously $50mth for 1GB of wireless data, seems pretty good to me.

On T3G to get the card free you have to sign onto a 36mth 100mb or higher, and that’s 100mb for $52.44, their highest data plan is 400mb @ $99.
