johnr: Whats wrong with free SMS weekends keeps the kids off there phones till the weekend

What's wrong with it is that it only applies to messages sent between 021 phones. When Telecom released $10 text back in 2003, the kids all bought 027 handsets as soon as they could save up enough pocket money. By the time Vodafone had released free text weekends, Telecom's market share in that demographic had grown to the point where disqualifying 027-bound messages from free text weekends was considered to be a major drawback.

In any case, I personally think that $10 text and free text weekends are both overrated. The only time I ever use text messaging these days is if I want to communicate with someone when the environment is too noisy to make a phone call (e.g. a bar). People seem to use text messaging because of the perception that it's cheaper, but if you consider how much information you could communicate during a one minute phone call versus the information that you can communicate in one text message, then you have to wonder if it's worth the hassle of awkwardly typing out silly little messages on a cramped telephone keypad.

Teens love using jargon and technology that their parents don't use. Well done, your post just boosted teen sms usage :)

to be fair, its easy to say something you dont use/treasure/need is over-rated.
we have hearing impaired people in our family, and texting is a godsend.

It's also great for families (I guess you could put friends there too) that live a while away from each other.
It's also just soo hard for us "young ones" to hold a phone up to our ears these days

I hardly think the'll bother...
Woosh launch new stuff in 22.5 hours too.

TXT does have it's use, Not all phone keypads are cramped and predictive TXT makes it easier and $10 TXT means it's no longer the ripoff it was before. TXT is good on places like trains, Workplaces, etc where calling would be intrusive.

Think of it like 20c send to billy 20c he replies, 20c you say sweet as, 60c GONE between you, would have been cheaper to call him for a minute at 49c and relay 25 odd TXT's worth of words off.

Who does that when they are still paying 20c though? on $10 text i might, just being idle on the couch, when i wouldnt make a voice call.

I tend to max out a lot of my texts with 160 characters of plain engrish... I think its a great communication method.

nd $10 TXT means it's no longer the ripoff it was before

Until the demise of my 025 last year I had free sms since 1999 and before than free on Vodafone due to other bugs back in the day..

It's made SMS a value product, not kept pricing at 1994 levels. (and NZ has cheap SMS, some countries are about 40c)

I laugh everytime I get one of those spam messages about 'Vodafone's new offer' / 'Free credit' etc. However, I think the cops should have gone after the moron who started the 'Send this message to 5 people and get $10 credit! If you don't get the credit call *555'
