Legally binding means a lot to a person with my personality and an uncle like mine to learn from.
Say I walked into a shop and asked (with an eye and ear witness of course): "does that plasma television *quotes model number* automatically mute when my phone rings out-of-the-box?" and they said "yes" and I took it home and it didn't I would return the next day and pedantically demand a suitable replacement with indentical or better specifications that could actually auto mute on a phone ring.
Problem with me is I never say die
hamiltont: I'll call to get mine sorted tomorrow and post back. "Unlocker" offered the service to me for $80 as it takes a long time?! Flashing firmware is always a fairly swift process, I'd suggest people avoid his service. I'll let you know how my flash gets on.

mazdawill: i think it really sucks that i pay a good grand for my n70 from vf, and then 2 months later find i have a way out of date firmware version and i have to spend that much to upgrade the fuc*erVery true. But I guess MFR is charging for the service, not the upgraded firmware in itself. Still, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, since newer firmwares bring fixes and enhancements, which you have to pay - even if these fixes and enhancements impact in the normal operation, which would be something you expect to be covered by warranty.

johnr is right. Yesterday I went into a Vodafone store about getting my 9300 upgraded to the latest ROM version. After finding someone who knew what I was talking about (which is always a challange in those types of store) I was told that if it was a NZ model and under warrenty, it would be free, but as mine was imported it would cost $50 ish just to SENT it to MFR for when to do it. There was no mention of the MFR charges, and I was told to ring them directly.
This is exactly the same response I received from another Vodafone store about 6 months ago in regards to my imported 6600, so I guess at least their consistant ;-)
Also, from what I understand the process of flashing can take some time, especially with the new phones are they have larger ROMs etc. When I did my XDA myself about a year ago it took about 40 minutes for the whole process, including backup and restore of data.

You have the updater available for download from the manufacturer's or distributor's site and you can do it at home or office.
