kiwipearls:
I typed www.youtube.com into FF.

Two points to conjecture over:

1/ You typoed the URL.
2/ Your browser has been hijacked by Malware to redirect Youtube.com.

Either way - nothing to do with YouTube, everything to do with your browsing habits and security methods.

Well it is odd that it went to a wrong URL - as all my url are autocompleted in FF and I go there almost daily.  So I do not know how the mistyped one slipped in there.  Am removing the typo one now so it does not happen again,

I guess yeah, my fault for not watching the URL properly.  I will have to wait till I get paid next month to top up and then send a text to stop it.  In the meantime I have no credit, so they are not making anymore money from them.

Guess I am just having a bad morning eh.  And it can happen to the best of us.

Hopefully Youtube can get that domain shut down?  Now that they are aware of it.

Yeah it seems it was number one.  And I have corrected this in FF.

Lesson learned for you.

For Vodafone, it should be clear that these Premium SMS people prey on people to make money of them.

They have done this with Facebook Apps, TV adverts, and obviously they let people use their affiliate links to create fake websites promising things they would never deliver.

Vodafone (and other mobile operators in New Zealand) should shutdown all these Premium SMS services.

Dont know if it will help, but I reported www.youtbue.com under Firefox help report web forgery. Not sure if it is actually a web forgery but I was reading something about this the other day where corporates were trying shut down such sites.

Sorry, John, I was replying to those while you were replying to me and have just read your threads now.  Can't read new threads while I am typing replies to earlier threads...sorry.

Just sending you a pm now with the text messages I received.

I understand the "legal" side if the user replied to the SMS. But it's obvious a lot of users have no idea what is going on, and after seeing a website that is obviously crafted to let them believe it's a YouTube promotion, we can only assume it's not done in good will.

I sent you a PM john which I typed out all the text's I got.  But this was the first one.

After I entered my mobile number for the "competition" I received this text:

(FreeMSG) To Subscribe enter PIN 5698 on the web or reply YES to 4414

This was at the top and I need to scroll to the next part.  Which I didn't until I realised what had just happened when I got the next text.

Help: 0800452279
$3/msg, 4msg/wk+joining fee $3  To Stop: STOP to 4414 Funmoblie, CSW Group

Most people like me, would have just entered in the code.  And then got suspcisous with all the text's sent aftwerwards.

So from now on, I am not going to do internet stuffs while I am distracted getting kids ready for school.

I normally do have all my websites linked in FF for one click access.  And I tell my friends to do this all the time with sites for World of Warcraft so they don't get hacked or go to fake WoW fansites.  I make sure to tell people to use Mal ware software etc etc and to protect their computer.

So my first time ever having something like this happen to me when I am normally very aware of my internet activities.  So it can happen to the best of us.

LOL

Well I suppose if someone doesn't get scammed in the first place - the people who can do something about it - won't know.  So hopefully someone who knows the legalities of this can try and stop it.  And I know it is a repetitive process and there will always be people out there looking for easy money.

So at least I was helpful for getting scammed.  Gotta look at the positives.

So glad I am on prepay though 0.0.  So yey for prepay!
