I don't think Virgin in AU are doing the $19 for a gig any more? I was there last week and couldn't find it. Their website has $29 for a SIM and 250MB data, which is more like $40 NZD.

Anyway, with the exchange rate the way it is, 2degrees is fairly competitive and I reckon I only spent a few bucks extra roaming with them in Sydney, with no hassle of changing SIMs.

My tip is to find a cafe with wireless and see if they leave it on at night when they're closed (Cherry Beans in Pyrmont).

So...you're stealing a wifi signal and that's how you beat roaming costs? Ooookay.

Nope. I paid, they gave me the password, I happened to be walking past the same place later and my phone hooked up again. But I'd be more likely to go back to the same place again.

Now compare the NZ prices with Optus prepaid at $1.32/60 KB ($22/MB) on the cheapest plan and $6.60/60 KB ($110/MB) on the most expensive! I saw the $6.60 rate mentioned in another thread and couldn't believe it...

NEW Turbo Cap Plus, Boost Super Cap and BlackBerry Super Cap - $6.60 per 60KB (+ 22c flagfall)
Data Blaster - $3.96 per 60KB (+ 22c flagfall)
All other plans - $1.32 per 60KB with a 22c flagfall.

Edit: Telstra's basic prepaid rate is $15/MB... an improvement but still not the best (especially considering that they're in AU$). I haven't looked at the other Aussie operators but it looks like we get a better overall deal in the cases that I've looked at.

Lol I'd buy a prepaid Optus sim card or sign up under a fake name for post paid then bring it back here and just torrent it up. Would be a great party trick to show off the invoice !

Alas Optus "only" charges $20/MB on postpaid.

only a couple of problems here,

1, credit check

2, need for credit card in most cases

3, not being able to return to Australia (well this one might not be a problem)
