throbb: Yeah I realise Orcons is not public, but it will be unmetered for orcon customers. Datacaps seem to be the biggest issue with steam not the lack of local content servers.
I dont know about anyone else, but having free steam data will play a large part of which ISP I choose or stay with.

Been quite a lot of people having issue with very slow steam downloads lately due to aussie server congestion so the NZ based server will help everyone in that respect.

This is good news, especially the unmetered part - except that's largely useless given you can't ensure Steam will use that server. It means the benefit would be more like a "surprising bonus" than something you can budget your data cap off. If TelstraClear were nice they'd just zero-rate TCP ports 27014-27050 (Steam download ports). Of course, that's open to abuse, but I doubt it'd be an issue.

We've built a server with enough storage to be able to accommodate the entire Steam library of games, plus plenty of room for future growth so it should be very rare for a TelstraClear customer to be directed elsewhere. (bar steam client updates).

We're making the risk very clear however, and will look into other ways to minimise that risk.

Hey guys, just an update...

We finished all work last week, and Valve are loading content as I type. We're talking 6TB here, and there's no certainty around the delivery speeds from their server so I can't provide an accurate ETA at this point.

When we get further word that everything has been mirrored we will be sending out an email to those who registered for a notification at http://telstraclear.co.nz/sub-sites/gaming-steam/

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here, and bring it to mine (@simcore) or @TelstraClearNZ's attention on twitter.

FYI: You can learn about and discuss the third party apps that help to control Steam access to specific servers on our ON3 forums if necessary, we also have a FAQ thread that is open to questions.

Is there a chance to cache content from others such as setting up a local akamai server so that software vendors that use the akamai network the content itself is locally hosted and free to download?

Hey mate, I've set up steamwatch to download just from the telstraclear steam server. Is it currently unmetered at the moment?

Yes it is already unmetered.

People are reporting that certain content such as TF2 and Portal 2 was loaded but I can't confirm what is or isn't loaded at this point.

I've downloaded some updates via the Telstra steam content server in the last couple of days, but I've had spikes in my usage exactly at the times I started the updates.

I used TCPview to confirm the updates were coming from the Telstra server.

Can anyone confirm that they've tested it to be unmetered at the moment? As I can't be 100% sure the usage has come from steam as I have flat mates who may have been using the net at the same time.

Hi Morris, you used TCPview but did you use Frey's Filter or Steamwatch to restrict access exclusively to the one IP?

Steam will download updates from multiple sources at the same time to provide you with a faster speed, if you used TCP view and noted the TelstraClear server, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of you pulling data in from another content server at the same time.

Have you read our FAQ and tools guide in the ON3 Network forums? I'd suggest waiting till we confirm all content is loaded and the best ways to manage your downloads/access (not difficult, but important).

Was downloading Total War: Shogun 2 and Portal 2 updates, but they both seem to have stalled, as has my attempt to install Dawn of War 2: Retribution. That's all I'm trying to do, and I am using SteamWatch (checked the event log, and it confirms it is blocking non-TLC servers).
