That's what I say when i'm sitting at meetings trying to tether my iphone and getting speeds little better than dialup! Telecom should run that as their speed comparison video.

The XT network may be relatively unloaded since not all CDMA subscribers have been migrated over. It's not really an apples for apples comparison till then. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a lemon again when that happens.

I doubt that is as true now as it was last year.
Telecom have had EVDO turned off for quite some time now, so any data users will have moved across already. The customer still on CDMA will be voice and text only (with a teeny tiny bit of data), which will a much lower (almost no) impact on data speeds when/if they come over to XT

NBR released some figures last month on total customers for each Mobile Network in New Zealand.

MOBILE CONNECTIONS

Vodafone: 2,458,000 (46.63%)*
Telecom: 2,193,000 (41.60%)**
2degrees: 580,112 (11.01%)***
MVNOs: 45,000 (0.76%)****

This NBR article reports a direct quote from Paul Reynolds "Chief executive Paul Reynolds said the number on XT rose from 51% of Telecom's total mobile connections (representing 77% of revenue), from 46% in the previous quarter"

So - if XT customers in July were 51% of their total customers, that would mean around 1,118,430 customers are on XT.

At a guess, Vodafone NZ might have around 1,700,000 3G customers (they don't release exact 2G/3G customer breakdowns that I am aware of) PLUS their roaming customers from 2 Degrees & MVNO's on top of this.

Therefore Vodafone NZ would easily have more than 7-800,000 3G customers than Telecom XT - resulting in significantly more people using their 3G service - this will result in slower speeds at different times.

Also, depending on Network load at the cell site, distance from the cell site, devices used to undertake speed tests, signal strength and other variables will affect 3G Mobile BB speeds.

There are so many variables to take into account that no comparison would ever be truly accurate, except in lab conditions which would also not really be an accurate comparison. I find discussions like these interesting because I often hear of people preaching "XTs faster than Vodafail", "Cant get signal on Vodafone, XTs so much better", etc, etc. that I almost begin to wonder if they are being paid to say these things. Although I never seem to have any problems with Speeds or Signal. In nearly every test I have done I have consistently found Vodafone to be much faster and with better signal in anywhere but the larger areas (e.g. Palmerston North, Wellington, etc.), in these instances the signal and speed are short of impressive. Just my opinion. The number of customers using data in larger areas vs. smaller areas is probably a factor in this.
