NokiaRocks: I guess some people just like to have something to complain about.

No, I like getting what I paid for. By the end of august, I was paying for a 4meg/2meg connection, but I only had a 2meg/2meg. Even tho the upgrade was "Free", I'm still paying for it.

That said, after the update, it's SWEET. I'm not convinced that TCL knows what a contention rate is, 'cos I get full speed almost all the time. Bravo :)

I was more on about the fact that most of the people had rung up and complained even before the end of August.

I signed up for the InHome package that includes 4Mb cable internet. All the Telstra hardware was installed last week. Imagine my surprise when during a large (multi-part) download using the new cable internet was limited to 2 Mb!

Even NEW customers are getting the same old speed!

However I must give credit to TCL customer service. One email via their online contact form and it was resolved first thing on Monday.

So far I've been surprisingly impressed. I switched from 3.5 Mb ADSL, so the speed isn't that much faster, however everything seems... snappier

I think the difference is the "contention rate". On DSL, if you are on a busy exchange, you may get 32kbits/sec out of the exchange, tops - even tho you -> exchange is 3.5meg. On Telstra cable, the contention rates are better, so even when a lot of people are using it, you get 2meg, which is a better % (50%, rather than about 10%) than DSL.....

It's something like that, anyway! Of course, even at peak time, I get 4meg (I'm in Brooklyn)..... so I'm not really complaining.

In addition to the better contention ratios, I think the much quicker upload speeds (2Mbps vs 128kbps) also make surfing the net, sending emails and even downloading quicker.

Which is TCl should be the biggest and best for broadband in NZ if only they could sort out their service issues.

Well, that and better coverage for their cable. It's their cable network that provides such a better broadband service than anything else available (to residential customers) in NZ. Shame Aucklanders don't like cables on poles - they're missing out.

Sorry haven't looked at this thread for a while. In reply to Mauricio, here's the text from the Autumn 2006 "News You Can Use" leaftlet TelstraClear sends out.

"Moving house? It pays to stay InHome. From the 1st of May, you can claim a $100 Noel Leeming voucher from TelstraClear when you arrange for your Telstraclear InHome services to be transferred to your new adress when you move house.

It's really that simple. All TelstraClear InHome customers qualify for this great offer. Just remember to contact us when you are moving house, request to tansfer all you services to your new home and claim your $100 voucher."

Terms and conditions say "You must request your voucher at the time you request your transfer" which I think is a bit conniving. The deal is not published on their website, their customer service reps didn't even know about the promotion and they only sent the voucher begrudginly after numerous phone calls. Sure it's a freebie but it would be nice if they were true to their word and actually delivered it instead of having to ask for something that was poorly publicised in a brochure most people probably throw out.

P.S. Should have mentioned I have the original brochure if anyone wants proof to show to TelstraClear.
