sbiddle: There are a myriad of reasons, two of which were pretty straight forward.

1 -Forget this

2 - Cost.

I know why they canned the roll-out , I am not going to disclose these exact details as i am not sure what was released as public info.

Bring on UFB.. Telstra are set to go especially with with owning a decent fiber backbone :)

*Waits for Telstra to release a 100mbit UFB plan despite saying nobody wanted 100mbit on HFC*

Arent we still waiting on TCL to announce new plans for cable customers....guess it depends on the definition of the word "soon".

and

I hate the overhead cables in Wellington..especially the large TCL ones..they are so gross and are actually causing a lot of the poles to lean causing issues with power/ telephone connection. I guess its the the weight...

DjShadow: Funny I always blamed the Auckland rollout not going ahead on John Banks (and those who hated the sight of big black cables)

Because cables in the sky would be the only option Tongue Out

It was certainly a lot cheaper than undergrounding everything.

Maybe would argue the opposite! Smile

There is actually solid core catenary wire secured to the poles that the copper, fibre and coax are secured to. I've seen plenty of poles hit by cars where the power lines have snapped and this catenary wire has held the load. The standing joke from many linespeople is that it's the TCL infrastruture actually keeping the power poles up!

The vast majority of people are also unable to identify what cables are TCL, the average overhead street will typically have 8 power cables with the 230V and 11kV distribution, along with Telecom cabling.

1/4 inch 3 ton breaking strain strand keeps poles up after car fade, just like digger fade for the underground network :)

When I was doing my training we were working on under grounding some telecom cabling in palmy. So just single 25-pair drop leads between poles plus the 2-pair service leads. We got the street all cut over and then it was time to cut down the old stuff. We cut down the 25 pair, felt the pull wobble a bit and then heard a massive cracking sound. The 25 pair was the only thing keeping that pole up lol.

Back on track.... there is nothing uglier than the telstra cable down otaki way. it just looks so much denser than the power cables and the terminations at each pole stick out like dogs balls!

I don't actually mind the telstra cables, I really think people need to get over it, the power cables are already up there, the telstra ones don't change much imo

hamish225: The way i see it, they missed out on a big opportunity to undercut telecom. why did they stop building it?

It's obviously never going to happen now, such a waste!

Their cable network was originally Saturn's (originally "Kiwi Cable"). Saturn borrowed many hundreds of millions of dollars from (mainly) Canadian banks - like the Toronto-Dominion Bank.

Those banks took a bath on the whole thing. It never made any money.

Telstra bought Saturn ("Telstra Saturn") and then soon after bought Clear ("Telstra Clear")....but the cable network has not been greatly extended since then as almost every new connection cost more than it earned....and borrowing money to pay for a losing system made (and makes...) no sense.

I followed all this fairly closely at the time and was a Saturn / Telstra Saturn / Telstra Clear phone / cable customer in Kapiti for several years.

The underlying problem was always that Labour / Prebble / Caygill / Douglas were dribbling idiots.....selling a $50Billion (replacement cost) national network for US$4.2Billion.

The die was cast. NO ONE could compete with an incumbent with a network sold for a song.

National took office and the relevant Minister, Maurice Williamson, did exactly NOTHING about that for 9 years. Telecom was always allowed to set the price for everyone else and give themselves a discount that meant their retail price was often lower than the wholesale price to everyone else.

Labour took office in 1999 and began work on fixing that problem by breaking up Telecom into retail services and network units.

We were scr*wed over by the neo-liberals / ACT-oid "true believers". We still are as many of them still are in positions of power in the National Party.....hence the lunatic decision to sell ENERGY assets in a downturn on the verge of Peak Oil starting to bite.

This is just as insane as what Labour did in 1990......and again, we will all suffer because of this government's ideological commitment to deprive us all of our own assets.

This craziness messed up our telecoms for 20 years...and now it will mess up our energy infrastructure for another 20.

Not nearly as gross as those ugly trolley bus wires.
