sbiddle: It'd be interesting to see if there are CRC errors occuring, does the 556a show these in the modem stats?

Update: So the speeds I'm getting now are pretty good, still varying from 6 sometimes to 15 which I don't mind as long as it works. I think the ping might just be speedtest being weird because I did pingtest and am getting fine ones to New Zealand, the only thing is that speedtests to Brisbane on speedtest.net are showing the same ping to NZ servers (around 115ms) but it seems everything is alright, thanks for everyone for the suggestions, still going to try an alt modem, the one I grabbed from work got home and it didn't have a power cable (should of looked first)
