I have some older neighbours who are still on old and much revenue earning 512k speed capped and homephone plan. Are they going to see a speed increase ?

They've got 15Mb outside the house and they video Skype to their kids overseas on 512k
Yeah , I know I've told them to get on the phone but they don't really see the point.

Something is wrong, because all HomePhone Plans are always maximum speed of line. They should call TelstraClear and ask to have the account reviewed and fixed.

I know that when TelstraClear implemented the change some account were left behind (or something like this, don't quote me on that). Just call the help desk.

r2b2: The more cynical person inside me thinks that they're performing an upgrade to the "data counter" and they don't have any backup ;)

The more cynical person inside me (well, when it comes to TelstraClear, there's not much else) thinks that they're simply going to use this as an excuse as to why large datacaps/unmetered is a bad idea (because performance will go out the window). Ignoring of course that people are going to make the most of this small window of opportunity - so of course it'll slow down.

Although I am intrigued by "first free broadband weekend" in the video - implying there will be more. Though that's probably just marketing bull.

And I do like this bit from the press release:

If you’ve been waiting to check out those YouTube videos or try your hand at online gaming, now’s your chance.

So they're admitting that their caps are actually a deterrent to using the internet properly?

And this:

With lots of people online for longer, some customers could experience slower than normal connection speeds, but we think that being able to do much more online without using any of your data pack makes it worth doing

Ok, so why not have unmetered all the time then? If it's worth it for a weekend (where performance will be much worse due to everyone jumping on the gravy train before it leaves), then why isn't it worth it permanently (where performance will be better due to people downloading stuff over a longer period, and after the novelty wears off)?

Well my first thought was to watch all those Netflix, Hulu+ and Vudu movies I had been eyeing to watch but didn't want to blow my bandwidth but in reality if everybody takes advantage of it, they just might be non watchable.

Of course all the BT users will go to town since download speed doesn't really impact on the final result, only the time taken.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

They can use that excuse now without doing a free weekend. If they so choose.

Life must be pretty miserable if you believe they are using this offer to screw you.

'First' does not imply there will be more. What marketing has Telstra been using 'marketing bull' in? I'm not aware of any myself.

So they're admitting that their caps are actually a deterrent to using the internet properly?

Now you are just putting words in their mouth. Plenty of people on low plans (because of price points etc) likely steer clear of content indicated because they choose not to pay for a larger plan.

Their website indicates 150GB data caps available. What part of a 150GB cap is "actually a deterrent to using the internet properly". Utter nonsense.

It is not economically viable to do this in New Zealand. Otherwise Don Gould would have done it already.

They could, but the point is that this would give them "evidence". For what other reason does a privately owned company do things than to make money? I never said they were trying to "screw" me. Just suggested that there may be an ulterior motive. It was half sarcasm anyway, if you didn't notice.

'First' does not imply there will be more. What marketing has Telstra been using 'marketing bull' in? I'm not aware of any myself.

"First" does generally imply that. If the first and last are the same, then you would almost never call it the "first", just "only" or with no such modifier. It doesn't necessarily mean that, but it could be a hint.

I never said that TelstraClear has used any "marketing bull" in the past. Not sure what gave you that idea.

Now you are just putting words in their mouth. Plenty of people on low plans (because of price points etc) likely steer clear of content indicated because they choose not to pay for a larger plan.

Talk about putting words in mouths! So far you've done it a few times to me by the way (up there ^ see that?). I'm not talking about the people who are paying out the nose for huge caps, I'm talking about the average user. "Plenty of people on low plans (because of price points etc) likely steer clear of content indicated because they choose not to pay for a larger plan." That's the point! TelstraClear said that basic internet uses (Youtube, gaming) are too much strain on people's caps. If they'd said "you can download that 500GB torrent you always wanted!" I wouldn't have mentioned it.

It is not economically viable to do this in New Zealand. Otherwise Don Gould would have done it already.

I never said it would be. You really seem to be taking this a bit too seriously. I'm just having a dig at their choices of words.

Morph, of course I like it. I just also like having a bit of fun at TelstraClear's expense, given their less-than-stellar record (which I don't want to derail and get into).
