sbiddle: IMHO this only says one thing - Vodafone honestly do not believe that HSDPA will be able to offer a true alternative to fixed line broadband for quite some time..

When Vodafone first proprosed their plan to offer their own local calling product, the first question raised was how their customers would access the Internet if they were to drop their copper lines. I believe that 3G Broadband will be a feasible solution for many, and Ihug will now offer an alternative for those who have more demanding needs in terms of speed and data caps.

From that point of view, this acquisition is not as surprising as it initially seemed.

Russell Stanners was interviewed on Radio Live this morning. I missed most of the interview when the bus entered the tunnel, but it was interesting to hear him say that he sees mobile broadband users outnumbering fixed broadband users. It seems to me that their intention is for Ihug to fill a niche which their wireless network will be unable to cater for in the forseeable future.

The fact that ihug have simply become yet another Telecom reseller reselling phone and internet services. After promising to take advantage of ULL ihug seemed to have changed paths and committed themselves to simply being yet another retail outlet for Telecom.

This of course may change since Vodafone obviously have the money to take advantage of ULL and install their own network gear.

That's exactly what I was thinking. To many people on Geekzone, the thought of surviving with a data cap of 1Gb or 2Gb may be horrifying, but I have a feeling that this would be sufficient to cater for the majority of the wider population.
