Thanks Fraser, I might well do that.

Spoke to a helpful chap at Vodafone who informed me that cabinetisation of my exchange is not actually complete - apparently at odds with the chorus SAT?? And so changing will not be possible.

Anywho... seems they want to do more isolation and speed tests... so will keep you updated.

Well, after another call and another isolation test which didn't reveal much new, it seems there is actually a cabinet close to my house as per the chorus SAT; so in 5 -9 day I should hopefully be on the wholesale network. Thanks for all the help guys, and I'll post back here when the change is made.

Check out this thread on the Vodafone NZ forum after a issue was resolved with the house wiring, Speed went from 7Mbps to 12Mbps DL

It makes no financial cost to do so, unless you're willing to pay a ballpark figure of maybe 500% more for your broadband. The regulated costs of access that are set by the Commerce Commission simply don't make this cost effective.

Did a master filter install yesterday on a Red Network customer. Speed went from 2Mbps to 17Mbps! They were on Telecom with OK speed, but after switching to Vodafone their broadband performance really went to custard. This is likely because Vodafone Red Network have lower noise margin target, so if there is a wiring issue, it will have a more significant effect.
NB: this customer is not in a cabinet area - so was not a mid point injection issue.

Hi.

Sorry to barge in on another ISP furum, but sometimes the problem can be at the Exchange as I think might be my problem.

On speedtest, the results are slow, But I have had my internal wiring upgraded to cat3 with a master filter. I am with Telstraclear through the wholesale network(i think). I am only next door to the Exchange (Otatara, Invercargill) The only difference I noticed before and after upgrade was the Attenuation dropped from 2db dl to 0db and I haven't had any disconnections. Is there something the chorus technician check at the exchange?

Hi, what error rates are you getting, does the modem report that.

Also what do you get by trying the Auckland speedtest servers, both WorldExchange and vodafone.

Hi, pity that was not more readible, a bit hard to understand, but from what I can glean there is no major error issues, so talk to your ISP, or maybe change ISP for one that delivers decent backhaul to your part of the country.

My only other comment is from the details you have posted there is nothing wrong with your DSL connection.

Our exchange is only a wee tin pot one. Probably old wiring on their side? At least my connection is reliable.

I know how this feels, I live right on the edge of the massey exchange in West Auckland. There are no cabinets in my area, but my neighbours who live one street over from me are connected to a cabinet

At my old place connect rates went from around 11mbps to around 17mbps after some wiring was replaced due to static on the phone line. That's a pretty significant jump.

@John, Fraser and stevenz; thanks for the info, very interesting stuff and exactly the sort of info I was hoping to get... So anecdotally from this really small sample it looks like fixing house wiring can cause anything from a 1.5x to 8.5x improvement. They all sound fairly significant though :)

While I'm waiting to change to the wholesale network, is it possible to get an idea now for whether it's worth looking at putting in master filterc? Or is it best to wait until after the change, then collect the numbers etc?
