freitasm: The last few comments have some truth in then. Without going into details (which I promised I wouldn't disclose) I am aware there's a budget assigned to this problem and work is in progress to solve it. This is pretty much inline with TelstraClear disclosure both here (once) and on Twitter (a couple of times).

What is the solution, how and when it will be implemented is what I can't disclose.

Forgive me if I am wrong...

..but are you saying you are aware of of information about a possible TCL solution to this 6 month issue but neither you or TCL will divulge what it is?

If this is so, I am even more disgruntled with my CURRENT ISP for divulging to limited numbers customers what the issue is  and what it is doing about it.

This is like "we have a super secret but cant tell you about it".

I am sorry but this has got beyond reasonable.

I would also assume 80GB customers are in the minority other than business customers.

- That high latency results in low transfer speeds.

Incorrect, latency should have little effect. Bandwidth is where things fall down.

Actually, this is one of the most correct assertions in the post.  Latency is a big contributor to throughput (or goodput) in networks - see the "Long Fat Network" effect, or Bandwidth Delay Product.

Latency to the cache servers is only around 150ms, this will not be an issue.  Latency isn't the issue here.

If we were being routed through the ISS, that could be a problem, but luckily TCL isn't quite that bad.

I agree latency is not the root cause of the TCL/Youtube issue (or it is very unlikely to be so); but 150ms latency on an interface that is optimised for <10ms latency (which, by default, Windows XP Ethernet interfaces are...) is definitely going to interfere with maximum performance.  This is why you see so many "TCP optimisers".

You are probably aware of how much people have been asking for this to be done. And yet you have no problems in coming publicly and try to destroy one of the very few 'lifelines' we have.

Good work.

I won't post about this anymore and won't lobby or talk to anyone about this anymore.

This wasn't an 'official' TCL disclosure. When someone disclose something to me in confidence I can't and won't betray their trust. You should be happy we could get some - if any - information from other channels but that is not going to happen anymore.

Enjoy.

freitasm: I was pleased to see something was being done with money allocated to solve the problem and appreciate your earlier post on this. It would be sad to see no further information provided on this (or other issues) in future.

Please continue to let us know what little you can. Geekzone is one of the few places we can come to for snippets of information and hope on seeing problems resolved.

I hope you change your mind in future and provide the sort of help you have in the past. I and many others are grateful for it.

hey for those people having youtube issues, does the red line thingy load fully on the youtube player? If it doesn't then something is wrong with telstra's access to youtube if videos on other sites load fully for you.

but if the red line load thingy does load fully and the video doesn't play smoothly and it looks like the video is starting and stopping, i think i found the problem.

i used a friend's old pc that has a 1ghz cpu with 128mb ram and the red line load thingy loaded fully but the video was starting and stopping. watched the same video on his new 3.2ghz pc and the same video played perfectly with no problems.

remember youtube only has 2 settings now which are 320p and 720p which require more cpu. you can't have quality lower than 320p on any hd video now.

so unless someone creates a firefox or ie plugin that somehow enables you to watch hd videos at a lower quality than 320p, your probably going to have to buy a new faster cpu. the url hacks to watch videos in lower quality don't work anymore and the greasemonkey scripts don't either.

This is not the issue in this case. We've been discussing this for 6 months. This is strictly a network issue. TelstraClear have (privately) admitted it. There are even graphs showing YouTube video loading speeds for TelstraClear vs other ISPs in this thread.

Let me check... Dual core, Intel, 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, ATI 1GB RAM video card. No, I think I am fine for hardware here.

I wasn't going to reply in this thread anymore, but seriously, what kind of post is this? Think a bit before posting please.

Way off topic (sorry) - but the mentions in recent posts above about Geekzone not disclosing sources or sensitive information prompted me to share this with you.

I for one am very grateful that freitasm and geekzone maintain a non disclosure policy. After my posting some time ago about cable modem issues, Telstraclear approached Geekzone asking for my IP address. They assumed that I had to be TCL staff and further they summarised that there was a good chance that I was on Telstraclear cable, and therefore if they got my IP address then they would have me.

I really thought I was posting only truth (as I saw it - admittedly ones personal view is always one sided). I posted at the time because I saw a glaring lack of information coming from Telstra about issues that you were all upset about at the time. I don't think I unnecessarily slammed Telstra, just gave some facts that explained some problems witht he high speed cable modem network. I think I even tried to be positive about the fixes that were planned and in the works.

Anyhow a certain Telstra employee who thinks it's his job to point out possible dissertion within the ranks sent my posts to Telstra management, who then approached Geekzone for my IP address.

I am forever grateful to Geekzone for sticking to their guns and maintaining my annonymity. Thank you thank you thank you :)

Well I just had another pretty frustrating YT experience last night with most videos (SD) buffering. I also experienced similar speed issues on a couple of Vimeo sites.

I see ADSL2+ is now available in my area so I wonder if I should jump ship. This lousy YT performance and the ever-promised but never fulfilled promise of a PVR area really driving me away from TCL and I have been a customer for over 6 years now averaging $220/month.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I noticed the TCL mobile ad the other day, which includes that subtle dig at Telecom's XT network. Something along the lines of providing a 3G network that works. Well Telecom, next time you run some broadband ads could you please return the favour.  I really think that's the best chance of accelerating some action at TCL's end.

I would just like to note that the YT performance is still garbage.

Beginning to wonder if i should take my $250+ monthly spend elsewhere?

At least TCL are now acknowledging the fault but are blaming it on 'external network issues'. My take on this is that the speed issues are caused by their no-peering policy. TCL are working with Google on resolving the issue and I suspect they are implementing one of Google's caching boxes on their network. (Google has hundreds/thousands of these around the globe on ISP's networks)

Slightly OT, but along with horrendous YT streaming performance, does anyone find other streaming services suffer? I find my Last.FM stream regularly buffering which can ruins ones listening pleasure.

I can't brain today. I have the dumb.
