I'm a new customer on their cable network in Christchurch. Jumped ship from Slingshot only because of the 10Mbit upload speeds available on their 100/10 cable plan. I don't use a lot of data, March on my ADSL was only 12GB.

There are good and bad points with the service.

I'll start with good:

Throughput is great. I can pull 80Mbps to one of my servers in the Netherlands and can push my full 10Mbps to anything I've tried.
Pings are a bit better than my ADSL, not that it worried me too much as I'm not a gamer.
I can RDP over SSH into machines at home now and have an experience almost equivalent to being physically connected. Likewise I can stream data out (reason why I wanted the fast upload) and it works flawlessly.
Youtube and other such sites buffer quicker than previously on ADSL.
With Slingshot, peak times really do bog down for anything considered unattended. Doesn't seem to happen with the cable connection so far.

However:

Browsing is significantly worse than my Slingshot ADSL connection. Longer page load times (it's not huge, e.g. facebook may take 1.5 seconds to fully load on TCL, but worked in < 1 second on my ADSL). I've certainly noticed that it is slower.
I know I shouldn't mention iSky, but I will. It doesn't work.
I have resorted to setting up a VPN link from my home router (Juniper) to my work one (also Juniper) and setting up static routes for national traffic. Work is on an FX fibre connection and peered with Snap. Seems to make national traffic work as I'd like to, but shouldn't be required.
Outages. I seem to have 10 or so mini outages of 1 - 15 minutes per week. I lose virtually all connectivity during them. Generally happens during peak. Has been annoying as I use a VoIP phone for calling and twice I've had it cut out on me, making me switch to my cell. Never had this kind of problem on my ADSL.

Basically, with ADSL, unattended traffic was far worse, but attended was great. Seems to be the opposite on cable.

Overall, I'm happy enough with the service to stay, but only because I really want the fast upload speed. If another option was available to me though, I'd jump ship in a heartbeat.

Can anyone confirm whether one can use TCLs ztalk with the $75 bundle ?
I'm just checking in case they are forcing me to use their uncompetitive standard toll rates !

ztalk is a rather expensive way to call these days. Why not move to a VoIP provider and save money?

We don't make many tolls. VFX is .05 for National Calls + VFX itself and Ztalk is .09 and I can use my POTS line.

For my needs the TCL deal still saves me $300 per annum [1st year only] over Xnet+VFX and thats without the cost of the device with FX ports e.g. PAP2T or a VoIP handset etc et al

I'd like to stay with WxC but they simply are no longer competitive despite waiting [at cost] for 6 months. Don't get me wrong VFX [over Xnet] is impressive

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd feed back that I got a courtesy/catchup call from Telstra Clear last night just to check how things were going. Extremely pleasant lady and very easy to understand etc. Covered all the basics about the plan/company/confirmed contact details etc. Was quite a nice touch.

I explained that our service was far less stable and speedy than our previous provider and this has been noted on our account. Things seem to be getting better, and I'm hoping this is due a massive uptake of the $75 a month offer and that it can be fixed. Time will tell.

Hi All.

I am In New Plymouth on the Spoitswood Exchange and have recently changed from Xnet Fusion to TCL, mainly because of the free 40GB data in the $75 promotion. VOIP wasn't perfect but broadband performance was very good with a 38mS ping and around 10Mbits down and 0.84 up to WXC speedtest server in Auckland.

So far my experience with TCL has been a comedy of errors and I now have pitiful broadband performance during evening peak time, Latency over 100mS and speedtest download speed regularly under 500kbps in the evenings. TVNZ on demand is unusable.

My Synch speed is 12362Kbps down and 946Kbps up

I have communicated this by the TCL support "My Stuff" but am getting the fob-off.

"We recently added extra international traffic capacity to help improve browsing speeds for our customers. We have also been working on other issues that have impacted Internet browsing for some customers. Over recent weeks, we started resolving issues that were impacting some customers in the Bay of Plenty, and parts of Waikato, Taranaki and Manawatu. Further work is continuing over the coming weeks, and your Internet experience should improve over time. As this is a complex issue, there is no overnight fix, and improvements will be incremental."

If their service is being affected by all the new customers being added then they shouldn't have extended the promotion until the network performance was bought back up to speed.

TCL have an obligation to provide a service of acceptable quality from the commencement of the service, not "over time". In my opinion they are not meeting this obligation to me and unless the performance improves dramatically and soon I will be rejecting the service in writing as being not of acceptable quality or fit for purpose and breaking my contract.

Problem is, I can see them arguing that any connection is on a "best effort basis" - there is no guaranteed SLA for a home broadband connection.

Regardless of any SLA, the Consumer guarantees Act says goods and services should be of acceptable quality and fit for purpose. The measure of acceptable quality is what a reasonable consumer would think was acceptable based on the nature of the goods, the price, and any statements that have been made about the goods.

If TVNZ on demand won't work without buffering then I don't think it's fit for purpose. Do you dissagree?

I also wondered what it would take to get out of the 12 month contract if service was no good.

I'm now tempted by the TCNZ Homeplan deals - no contract required if you don't want the modem !

If it can be proven that your poor performance is not caused by faulty wiring, then you would be absolutely right IMHO.
I joined with this caveat in mind, if the bandwidth was bad, but fortunately, TC here in Waihi Beach is fine.

My evening performance varies over the evening and with each test. Worst between 8 and 9 pm. Have a look at the speed test history here.

Remember that the GMT AM times are NZ PM.
Click the more results button at the bottom of the page a couple of times to see the Xnet tests. Results prior to 16/5 are Xnet.
Also something very odd, When I first went to TCL (16/5) my evening speed test results for that day were OK. After they "Fixed" my profile because my usage meter wasn't working (quote TCL "I have checked your account and found that an error occurred in creating the broadband profile order") , my evening speeds dropped through the floor.

I only left Xnet because my data needs are growing and they didn't have anything to compete with the current TCL and Slingshot bundle offers. I am regretting making that decision now. I didn't need the modem but didn't think about trading it for no contract term :(

I don't know how the contract would work without a fixed term because the 40GB free data per month is only for the term of the contract?
