But in all seriousness.. I do agree with John/Steve... No mobile network has nationwide coverage. Just need to find a network that works for you coverage / price / feature wise... and deal with the downsides.

In all fairness, Vodafone coverage is excellent for the majority of people. I find what is lacking is the signal strength. Just going through the Victoria tunnel on my (same) phone with XT I get full reception. Proximity may be one factor but it would seem then that my phone is never near "any" Vodafone towers - Farmers on Lambton Quay, Pak n Save in Mt Albert or anywhere I'd expect decent reception ... or perhaps Telecom likes building their towers near tunnels and populated areas :P

My suspicion is this mostly has to do with the volume of network traffic rather than positioning.

The issue is to do with network frequencies. When Vodafone deployed their 3G network 2100MHz was the only frequency being used for 3G. In the real world 2100MHz signals struggle to penetrate tissue paper, let alone a reinforced concrete building.

By 2008 using the 900Mhz spectrum for 3G became reality, and all of Vodafone's rural coverage uses this band. It's no secret that Vodafone are currently deploying 900Mhz 3G in towns and cities to complement the existing 2100MHz coverage, and this will make a massive difference to their network. One could even go as far as arguing on a technical level that it'll give Vodafone a massive jump over Telecom and 2degrees in terms of network capacity.

If you look at somewhere like Wellington where Vodafone have over twice the number of cellsites as Telecom, if 900Mhz was be be deployed on the vast majority of those sites you'd instantly see Vodafone's inbuilding signal strength rocket ahead of Telecom, and total network capacity to also be significantly greater, purely because of the number of sites.

These are the people who will punch you for not turning off your kindle on takeoff and landing thinking they are saving the masses by doing so, not do their own research into the price of their property after its gone in just listen to the other people that come up with every random excuse for the "not in my back yard but I'll take the coverage thanks" replies.

Have the mobile providers done any research into this that they could throw at the complaints?
There is a good chance it would help improve the value of properties with extra coverage especially in holiday areas, if it looks like an eyesore try and come to an agreement with the provider like painting it and maybe disguising it as a tree.

Also of they continue to complain about the radio waves better go through there houses with a device that detects this stuff and inform them of evening that emits higher forms of signals (cordless phones, microwaves, tv's etc) in fact I would just taken them to their fuse box and turn off the mains to help them solve the immediate problem once and for all they can then go to their neighbours to discuss their Wi-Fi routers etc.

The teens were probably looking for something to do over the holidays why not protest and maybe get to pillage.

I could go on forever.

I find it funny when people go to a beach or to an event and complain to their Telco about reception and speed. If you're on a beach, then relax, enjoy the weather rather than replying to that twitter or fb status.

I Think every Telco is good in its own way. They cannot provide full reception everywhere considering our geographical structure. Company A can have good reception at location X and Company B can have good reception at location Y.

At the end of the day if you are not happy with what you have and what you are paying for, don't make your life miserable, simply switch. save your time, energy and enjoy the beach :)

This thread hits a chord with me - my Vodafone coverage in Tauranga was dreadful, you couldn't commute from one side to the other without dropping calls or having spots where your data died (makes streaming hard work).

Switch to 2degrees and hello a network that seems to cover all the bases!

No complaints with 2degree CSRs either who go out of their way to help you and are proactive (they even call you back when they promise they will), this is service I never got from Vodafone.

Take the advice offered by the other respondents - switch to a provider that works.

FYI I am on an iPhone 4.

In Tauranga, if you happen to be at Bayfair Mall, inside the K-Mart, vodafone reception is patchy. Sending a text can be difficult while in there. On Telecom XT, my reception is full bar! - same phone.

My personal experience is that telecom XT works better for me in the places I use it (in Tauranga).

But, in saying that, some will have the opposite experience. Just go with the operator that meets your coverage requirements.

Isn't competition (and number portability) great!!

Both networks have similar coverage area, but may not overlap geographically. It mat be good in one area, not so great in others and vice versa.

Pick the one that works better in the areas you need. Asking "which gas better coverage in New Zealand" is too broad.
