For what it's worth, Tumblr hosted images are slow to load. About 10 seconds at times before anything appears. Separate issue, just sayin :)

so pleased i checked here this morning. damned facebook been driving me nuts lately with slow or endless loading. switching to that https thingy mentioned here has fixed it *touch wood*. thanks all.

Just to add to this discussion, Facebook has been like this for us for weeks,

Two separate computers, Win7 and Win Vista Biz

We are on TCL's unbundled Dunedin service and access everything else with ease, but facebook, its a hit and miss thing, out of 5 attempts, usually 3 attempt get through.

Haven't really worried about it but thought I would add to the thread here about it. Latest failed attempt was this morning.

I have ruled out it being anything internally on any of our computers or network.

Note that using https is recommended for security and in this case it's a workaround because it bypasses the TelstraClear proxy farm.

This is probably hard to diagnose but now that TelstraClear knows this specific service is being affected and not only one user then they might be able to trace things and find what's going on.

The problem is that while Facebook affects a lot of people and is therefore easy to see something is happening, a more obscure site may be affected as well but not many people report or just assume it's a one off.

When a lot of users say "something is wrong" then something is wrong.

It couldn't be ruled out, but seeing there is some "history" with the proxy giving grief before, with similar symptoms, in other sites...

I've had issues with Facebook again this weekend, as well as images on Google+, The Verge, Tumblr etc. – Immediately solved by using Google DNS (which isnt ideal for all things) but at least it doesn't break the web like the cache does at the moment (assuming it's that).

I'm on cable in Christchurch and occasionally experience the same problems others have described.

When these issues do ocour the error code returned from chrome is net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE.

The error seems to suggest that a connection is made and an HTTP exchange is taking place, but the response body is empty. It would be interesting to observe the HTTP request(s) / response(s) that take place when one of these errors occurs to see exactly what's going on, unfortunately I haven't had capture software running when one of these event occurs.

Has anyone tried using, say, Google DNS servers and experience the same issue?

Facebook is playing up but I am reluctant to change my DNS servers atm because I'm in the middle of a download.

After having a nightmare with this - we might have fixed or significantly improved the issue - only time will tell.

Here what we did via entry into hosts file - (cut and paste from site)
Pardon if silly comment for those in this site but Dont copy the ip address below - run ping for yourself

So finally here is the solution...
go to some online ping sites like http://ping.eu/ping/
and ping the problem like "static.ak.fbcdn.net" so that you will get the ip address in result like...

64 bytes from akamai-deploy-5.latnetserviss.lv (159.148.86.199): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=43.5 ms
64 bytes from akamai-deploy-5.latnetserviss.lv (159.148.86.199): icmp_seq=2 ttl=49 time=43.6 ms
64 bytes from akamai-deploy-5.latnetserviss.lv (159.148.86.199): icmp_seq=3 ttl=49 time=43.5 ms

Since u got the IP Address "159.148.86.199" Now open
my computer > windows > system32 > Drivers > etc
here u will find a file named "hosts"
open it in notepad.

You may find
"127.0.0.1 localhost" somewhere at the end

make it a new entry ur ip address alongwith site like this

127.0.0.1 localhost
159.148.86.199 static.ak.fbcdn.net

save it..

Now refresh your site, in my case it was www.facebook.com

I don't follow bookmarks for this kind of sites. I usually just type in the address bar. So in the last five days, every time I type www.facebook.com it just waits there until it returns an error, then I remember "Oh, yes, this is TelstraClear, need to bypass their caches with https instead".

So, yes. Still a problem. No specific time of day, just about any time.
